Designer Karen Walker Transforms into 9 People for Her Campaign
It's hard to top a celebrity like Toast, the Insta-famous, tongue-hanging pup who currently has 374K followers (and counting), but for Karen Walker's spring 2017 campaign, the designer might have done just that by choosing to—wait for it—star herself. Aptly titled "Transformers," the designer illustrated how transformative a pair of sunglasses can be by making herself over into multiple personalities.
She drew inspiration from the works of photographer Cindy Sherman, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Andy Warhol, and with the right makeup, wigs, and attitude, she tapped into nine alter egos.
"As soon as that wig and those glasses go on, it was unstoppable," Walker tells InStyle about the process. "We were interested in shining a light on and exaggerating that feeling you get when you put on a new pair of shades and, for a moment at least, feel like you’re taking on a new character."
She's a badass biker girl in one. In another, she's a country star with a sky-high platinum blonde bouffant that Dolly Parton would approve of. "The characters we created are all fictional using a bunch of different people, real or imagined, as jumping off points, she explains. "The characters we created represent the heightened reality you feel when you put on a new pair of shades."
But as for which one she relates to the most? "I don’t know if I’m ever like any of them," she says. "Or, maybe I’m a bit like all of them."
