Zendaya Wore Her Own Clothes In Her Latest Movie

We've always imagined that Zendaya has one of the most enviable wardrobes, but now, what was once a theory could prove true on film. In her Septemeber cover with InStyle, the 23-year-old actress revealed that she actually wore her own clothing for her latest movie Malcolm & Marie, which was filmed in quarantine.

In an interview with Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors, Zendaya explained how the film came together. "It was an incredible experience. I'd been talking to Sam [Levinson, the creator of Euphoria] often during the quarantine. Sometimes he'd just call to shoot the shit and chat about life. And eventually, I said to him, "I need to do something creative. So we bounced ideas back and forth, and then he started writing. Sam reached out to John David [Washington] about wanting to be a part of the project, so we fronted our own money and put it together ourselves," she said.

She went on to say that for safety reasons, she ended up doing her own hair and makeup and wore her own clothes. "Our crew was a very small group of people who are also from Euphoria. And the No. 1 thing was safety. Everyone had to quarantine and get tested in order to shoot in isolation. We created our own little bubble and made sure that once we were in, we couldn't leave. We were able to workshop and rehearse together — it was very much like a play," she told Cullors. "I did my own hair and makeup and dressed in my own clothes. And then we shot in black and white on film, so we'll see how it turns out. I think we were able to create something really special. And I'm grateful that we learned how to do it on our own."

In early July, the actress announced the film, which also stars BlacKkKlansman actor John David Washington, with an Instagram photo of the two of them together. While the plot of the film is still in question, what we do know is that it was shot in black and white, and is reflective of the social themes the world is currently experiencing.

Even with the coronavirus pandemic, this year has been huge for Zendaya's career. Not only does she have another highly anticipated film, Dune with Timothée Chalamet coming out this year, but she was also nominated for her first Emmy for her role in Euphoria. On Instagram, she shared the exciting news writing, "I’m honestly speechless, my heart is just overflowing with love and gratitude. I’m so incredibly honored to work beside the talented people that I get to call family. I am a small piece of a big beautiful puzzle and I’m so proud of all of you."
