Buns don't have to be reserved for the local librarian! This year the classic hairstyle surfaced on the red carpet, bigger than ever. Jennifer Lopez fancied a high, exaggerated bun that looked elegant with her classic drop earrings. Hairstylist Ken Paves invented what he calls a "hair face lift" with Lopez on the set of The Wedding Planner. "We've been loyal to the high ponytail or bun ever since. Pulling hair up and back from behind the ears makes you look years younger, and she loves it," says Paves.

"This look works for just about anyone," says makeup artist Linda Hay. "It's always chic, timeless and ageless." Scarlett Johansson took a dramatic approach to the cat eye with a smoky, almond-shaped application.

Thanks to modern hair techniques, whimsically long hair isn't just a Rapunzel fairytale. Fergie went for all-out extremes by pulling her coif into a sleek style with the help of a hair piece. The height and slicked-back sides of the ponytail helped to accentuate The Duchess's striking cheekbones resulting in an look that that was glamorously appropriate for the red carpet.

Stylist's shears worked overtime this year as some of Hollywood's leading ladies leaned toward short and shorter styles. Mid-year Victoria Beckham broke out from the pack and chopped her shoulder-length, bang enhanced bob into a spiky androgynous cut. "Short hair on Victoria is most becoming," says hairstylist Garren of the Garren New York Salon, who cut the stars hair into the gamine crop. "When I spoke to Victoria, I was smitten by all the energy she has….with her incredible face shape, and beautiful eyes, it was clear, the hair had to go."

As makeup trends veered towards color experimentation, amped up pink lips became a fresh and modern go-to look on the red carpet this year. "Hot pink lips look great on virtually everyone, especially if you pair it with a bold liquid liner on your lids and peachy-pink cheeks," says celebrity makeup artist Amy Nadine. Alexis Bledel brought out her piercing baby blue eyes with a bright pink lipstick that looked graceful with minimal makeup and sleek hair.

"I love the arrival of emerald shadow, it's a beautiful color for most skin tones," says makeup artist Linda Hay. Wood let her makeup take center stage by wearing a black dress, a move that made the over all affect chic and not clownish.
