Leonardo DiCaprio Wore a Backwards Baseball Cap to Meet a Former Prime Minister With Bar Refaeli
Who: Oscar-winning actor, producer, and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio, 47, and Israeli model and entrepreneur Bar Refaeli, 36.
How They Met: The actor and the model reportedly met at a party for U2 in 2005 or early 2006.
In April 2006, People reported on the burgeoning romance, which was characterized by a "romantic getaway" in Paris.
Why We Loved Them: Again, I am personally obsessed with a celebrity couple who makes an effort to keep their business to themselves. No blood vial-exchanging or emoji-laden anniversary posts here. If it weren't for the paparazzi's enduring interest in the couple, we may never have even known they were dating.
"I am there for him and I am at all the events," Refaeli reportedly told Israel's La'Isha magazine of DiCaprio. "I just don't walk in hand-in-hand with him. I don't see any reason. I don't need to strike poses with him in front of the cameras." Amen. "No one needs to know how we kiss."
DiCaprio said his own interest in keeping his relationships private was (of course) inspired by actors he admired, like his This Boy's Life co-star Robert De Niro.
"I want to be an actor just like my role models," he told Swiss newspaper Le Matin in 2010. "Robert De Niro, for example … Being discreet in his private life has allowed him to be even more credible in different roles on the big screen."
When They Peaked: You know your relationship isn't exactly typical when date night includes meeting a former prime minister.
While on a trip to Israel in 2007, DiCaprio and Refaeli met with former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres. Though Dicaprio left his paparazzi-thwarting mask at home, he still managed to wear a memorable accessory to the meeting: a backwards baseball cap. "Leonardo apologized for not dressing properly and in order to look fine turned his baseball cap," Peres said, according to People. Iconic, really. Refaeli kept with the casual vibe, wearing what appears to be jeans and a Timberland sweatshirt. Peres wore a suit.
The Breakup: People reported that DiCaprio and Refaeli's relationship had "ran its course" in Oct. 2007. Apparently that course changed shape, as they appeared to be back together (and globe-trotting) throughout 2008.
The couple went on another hiatus in the summer of 2009. "It could just end up as a break but for now they're doing their own thing," a source told People at the time.
The following spring, Refaeli opened up about the "half year" in which she and DiCaprio took a break. "I needed it," she reportedly told La'Isha of the couple's time apart. "I came to understand a lot of things about myself."
"I worked on myself [and] I grew up," she went on. "I didn't know what 'alone' was like. Today I know that a relationship can work only if you know you can be alone and you are not afraid. Today I'm not afraid of being alone."
By mid-2011, DiCaprio and Refaeli were done (for good this time).
"It was amicable, they're still friends and they are still talking," a source told Page Six at the time. "They just grew apart and went their separate ways."
"Neither were ready to settle down," the source continued, "and both have busy careers that have been taking them in different directions."
In a strange (cinematic, you might say?) twist, the relationship became tabloid fodder once again years later, when Refaeli found herself in legal trouble.
In 2020, the model signed a plea bargain after being convicted of tax evasion between 2009 and 2012. According to the Associated Press, she was indicted for neglecting to pay taxes on the $7.2 million she made during this period by falsely claiming to live abroad (in the U.S.). During much of this period, of course, she was with DiCaprio, whose residence she claimed as her own. The court rejected this rationale since she and the actor did not fit the criteria for a "family unit."
Where They Are Now: DiCaprio went on to date several more young blonde models and actresses, including Blake Lively, Erin Heatherton, Toni Garrn, Kelly Rohrback, and Nina Agdal. He's been in a relationship with Mickey and the Bear star Camila Morrone since late 2017.
The actor's latest, Adam McKay's Don't Look Up, premiered on Netflix Dec. 24.
Refaeli wed businessman Adi Ezra in 2015. They've since welcomed three children together: Liv, 5, Elle, 4, and nearly 2-year-old David.
