Taylor Swift Speaks Out Against Donald Trump's Attempt to Dismantle the U.S. Postal Service

"He is WELL AWARE that we do not want him as our president."

This week, President Trump revealed he's against providing funds to the U.S. Postal Service in the latest stimulus package negotiations, baselessly claiming that an increase in mail-in voting would lead to "fraudulent" results in the upcoming election. His opposition of funding to the government agency will make it that much more difficult to handle the influx of ballots, and many are accusing the president of voter suppression — Taylor Swift included.

On Saturday, the singer called out Trump's attempt to destroy USPS in a series of critical tweets. "Trump’s calculated dismantling of USPS proves one thing clearly: He is WELL AWARE that we do not want him as our president," she wrote. "He’s chosen to blatantly cheat and put millions of Americans’ lives at risk in an effort to hold on to power."

She continued, "Donald Trump’s ineffective leadership gravely worsened the crisis that we are in and he is now taking advantage of it to subvert and destroy our right to vote and vote safely. Request a ballot early. Vote early."

According to The New York Times, Trump and his administration have already begun to take steps towards dismantling the postal service. The agency has stopped paying mail carriers and clerks the necessary overtime for completing deliveries each day, which has caused substantial delays in the shipment of letters and packages. Meanwhile, post boxes have been removed from neighborhoods across the country.

"A friend in Portland Oregon sounding the alarm as post boxes are being removed from neighborhoods. He sent this pic," tweeted actress Mia Farrow alongside a photo of a large truck driving away with several post boxes in the bed of the vehicle. Chrissy Teigen retweeted the image, writing: "HOW CAN THIS BE HAPPENING???? How is this really happening????? How can he do this?? He will literally stop at NOTHING. even his supporters HAVE to understand this is wrong. NO???"

At a White House press briefing on Wednesday, Trump said USPS's role in the election would lead to "one of the greatest frauds in history," and the next day, he doubled down on his claim during an interview on Fox News.

"They want three and a half billion dollars for something that'll turn out to be fraudulent, that's election money basically," he said. "They want three and a half billion dollars for the mail-in votes. Universal mail-in ballots. They want $25 billion, billion, for the Post Office. Now they need that money in order to make the Post Office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots."

Here are some ways you can support the USPS amid Trump's attack: Buy some stamps directly from the USPS website, text USPS to 50409 and @Resistbot will send an email to your local representative demanding they #SAVEUSPS, or sign a petition. You can also visit HeadCount.org to check your registration status and request an absentee ballot.
