Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas Gender-Swap Roles in Quibi's "Princess Bride" Remake
A remake of The Princess Bride is coming to Quibi, but don't expect a typical reboot of the '80s film.
While stuck in quarantine these past few months, a number of celebrities teamed up to shoot a homemade version of the film on their phones. The movie will debut a new chapter each day for two weeks, starting on Monday.
Many of the actors shot their parts separately due to social-distancing measures, but real-life couples were able to appear on-screen together as Princess Buttercup and Westley. However, in a major plot twist, newlyweds Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas gender-swapped their roles. In the film, Jonas wears a gown and blonde wig, while his wife, Turner, sports a black mask as Westley, as the pair escape the Fire Swamp infested with its Rodents of Unusual Size (played by the couple's corgi).
Sophie and Joe will be joined by an all-star cast, including Chris Pine, Hugh Jackman, Tiffany Haddish, Jennifer Garner, Neil Patrick Harris, and many more.
Meanwhile, the idea for the off-beat project came from director Jason Reitman as a way to stay busy during lockdown and raise funds for those affected by coronavirus, with Quibi pledging to donate $1 million to World Central Kitchen — which provides meals to the needy during quarantine — in the film's honor.
"The week that the stay-at-home order came through in California, I just woke up one of the first mornings, I think like most people did, feeling as though, 'All right, I need to be able to do something of value,'" Reitman told Vanity Fair. "I just thought, 'Can we remake an entire movie at home?'"
He began reaching out to various actors, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. "It was like, ‘Oh—that sounds like fun,’” added Reitman.
