Simone Ashley Had a Corset-Related Injury While Filming Bridgerton
As we're all waiting impatiently for season 2 of Bridgerton and the next set of headlines coming from Lady Whistledown, the cast is opening up about exactly what it took to get into character, including some behind-the-scenes information about those over-the-top, completely awe-inducing costumes. Simone Ashley, who is set to star as Kate Sharma in the Netflix hit's sophomore season, said that she had a lot of trouble with the series's signature corsets — and actually tore her shoulder while the show was filming.
"I had a lot of pain with the corset. I think I tore my shoulder at one point!" she told Glamour U.K. She went on to say that because the clothes were so restrictive, she needed help with everything, "because when you're in a corset, you can't put your shoes on."
In addition to getting accustomed to the corsetry, Ashley said that she also had to take riding lessons — fans of the Julia Quinn series know exactly what a huge deal horseback riding is in the second book. While daily saddle time may sound like a slog, Ashley said it really helped her not only get comfortable on horseback, but to feel like she was going back in time to the Regency era.
"I'm quite natural and I'm quite sporty anyway," she said. "At the start, I was in the saddle every other day, pretty much for one to one and a half hours a day. I loved it. After moving from L.A. and a lot of change, I think that was something that really helped, because once you're on the horse, you kind of get out your head and you don't think of anything else."
Bridgerton season 2 arrives on Netflix on Friday, March 25.
