See Shadowhunters Star Katherine McNamara's Exclusive New York Comic Con Photo Diary
As the star of Freeform’s supernatural series Shadowhunters, Katherine McNamara is no stranger to wearing cool costumes. But at New York Comic Con this weekend, the 20-year-old actress traded in the uniform of her badass human-angel hybrid character, Clary Fray, and was instead surrounded by fans decked out in fantastical getups of their own.
We teamed up with McNamara for a behind-the-scenes look at her entire Comic Con experience, from primping with her glam squad (hairstylist Sami Knight and makeup artist Megan Lanoux) to hitting the Hammerstein Ballroom stage for a panel with her Shadowhunters co-stars, during which they dished all about the show’s upcoming second season.

AN EARLY START
“Good morning! Woke up bright-eyed and ready for Comic Con. This bed is so comfy, but Comic Con is too exciting to miss!
FINDING THE RIGHT OUTFIT
“Decisions, decisions. So many great options to choose from to wear for the big day…”
FINDING THE RIGHT ACCESSORIES
“Which would you choose?”
THE FINAL CHOICE
“I ended up going with a burgundy Ted Baker suit with a lace bodysuit and striped pumps. I love wearing suits. It makes me feel strong and chic. Plus, it has such a classic look.”
“The amazing Sami Knight sculpted my hair into soft wavy texture. We wanted something loose and relaxed that would last all day but still had a bit of glam.”
“The beautiful and talented Megan Lanoux working on my makeup. We decided on a champagne eye with some daytime smoke, and a peachy rose lip to match the hue in my shoes.”
“For accessories, I'm trying to keep it simple with a black leather clutch and chic sunnies. I’m also bringing an extra battery brick to keep my phone charged all day.”
THE FINAL LOOK
“All dressed up and ready to go! This team is so incredible. I feel so lucky to have them on board to help me get ready for this big day.”
TWO OF A KIND
“Ted Baker twins! Alberto [Rosende] and I both showed up to NYCC in Ted Baker ensembles. Just goes to show that great minds and onscreen best friends think alike.”
“Oh my goodness! We are so thrilled and shocked to see this amazing poster on the Comic Con floor!”
“With the woman who started it all, the incredible Cassandra Clare, author of The Mortal Instruments book series. It's always lovely to have Cassie around for our panels! She's clearly the expert on the Shadow World.”
“Shadowhunters, assemble! Feeling the love while chatting with fans after our panel. The response from them always floors me. They are so passionate—we are lucky to have such a supportive fandom.”
A HELPING HAND
“Sometimes things get a little crazy during Shadowhunters panels. Regardless, we have fun! What's important is that we are always there to give each other a hand. Just like I'm doing with Dom here…”
MORE FAN LOVE
“Deliriously happy during the signing session with fans. Hearing their stories (and seeing their cosplay costumes) is always such a joy!”
SO MANY SUPERPOWERS
“I always knew this guy was a superhero. Ran into Mike Colter, the one and only Luke Cage! We worked together years ago, but it's been too long. What a super place to catch up.”
THAT'S A WRAP
“All done for the day! On our way to the cars after Comic Con festivities with the whole team. From our showrunners and producers to the cast and the rest of the crew—we love you and thank you for the support!
AND NOW, BACK TO BED
“Happy Comic Con to all and to all a good night. Headed off to grab some much needed shut-eye after a long day. Sweet dreams, all!”
