Alexis Ohanian Defended Serena Williams From a "Sexist Clown"
"2021 and no holding back when a racist/sexist clown with a platform comes for my family."
If you come for Serena Williams, you'd better be ready for Alexis Ohanian.
This week, Ohanian, Williams's husband, slammed Romanian former tennis player Ion Tiriac, who, for some reason, began 2021 by commenting on Williams's age and weight.
"At this age and the weight she is now, she does not move as easily as she did 15 years ago," the Madrid tennis tournament owner said during an interview. "Serena was a sensational player. If she had a little decency, she would retire. From all points of view."
After journalist José Morgado tweeted the interview, writing, "Safe to say Serena will never play Madrid again," Ohanian responded, ""Safe to say no one gives a damn what Ion Tiriac thinks."
In a follow-up tweet, he called Tiriac a clown and suggested that his and Williams' 3-year-old daughter, Alexis, is a better tennis player.
Ohanian didn't mince words, adding, "2021 and no holding back when a racist/sexist clown with a platform comes for my family."
It's not the first time Tiriac has commented on the tennis champ's weight — in 2018, he told a German publication, "With all due respect, 36 years old and 90 kilograms," adding that he wished women's tennis had more headliners."
"I always say people are entitled to their opinion," Williams told the New York Times about the comment. "Clearly there's more to women's tennis than me. There's a lot more, but I'll have words with him, believe me, I'll have words with him. It's an ignorant comment, and it's a sexist comment, and maybe he's an ignorant man."
