A Complete Timeline of Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost's Relationship
She says he's the love of her life.
Funnyman meets femme fatale. It's a tale as old as time, but that doesn't make Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost's relationship any less endearing. It all goes back to Saturday Night Live, where Jost is a head writer and Johansson might as well be a full-time employee, racking up six stints as host. Even though the two were quiet about their relationship, it's become a full-on love story.
With Avengers red carpets, romantic Hamptons getaways, and cameos from SNL players and Ellen DeGeneres, here's every milestone, from the first time they met to a fairy-tale worthy engagement.
Johansson appeared in a Saturday Night Live sketch that Jost directed. When she recalled the experience, she said that she noticed his confidence right away.
"It was some dumb parody that he had written, and he was in there partly directing this segment we had to do," Johansson told The Hollywood Reporter in 2019. "That's my first memory of him. He seemed very confident at the time. I don't know if he felt that way, but in that environment, if you're not confident as a writer, your stuff just never gets produced."
People reports that Johansson filed for divorce from her second husband, journalist Romain Dauriac. She appeared on SNL as host for the fifth time that month, as well.
Jost's SNL co-star Kate McKinnon gets the credit for introducing them officially. Page Six writes that "multiple sources" confirmed that the two "made out at least twice ... at the bar in front of everyone" at an SNL party.
According to The Daily Mail, the two are seen on a date together in East Hampton, New York. A few days later, the couple is seen with Jost's brother and sister-in-law in Montauk.
Jost attended the Emmy Awards solo, but he didn't hold back when she got asked about Johannson: "She's wonderful" he told Entertainment Tonight. As for why the two didn't make things red carpet official at the time? "She's working, so otherwise she would be here," Jost said, adding, "she's pretty cool. It's hard to have a lot of complaints [...] she's pretty awesome."
People reports that the two are serious — so serious, in fact, that they've officially met each other's families.
"They're very much in love. It's serious," an unnamed source told the magazine. "They're both very respectful of each other's careers and very supportive. They're super cute together."
Later that month, the two officially step out together at the 2017 American Museum of Natural History Gala.
Jost and Johansson attend the Avengers: Infinity War premiere together. A fellow attendee told Us, “Their eyes lit up when they looked at each other.”
If that wasn't a big enough deal, they attend the Met Gala together.
This time around, Jost does have a date to the Emmys. Jost co-hosted the ceremony alongside his Weekend Update pal Michael Che.
The couple's friends opened up to Us, giving readers a look into just how head over heels they are for each other.
"Colin is still head over heels for Scarlett," a source said. "He thinks she is incredible, kind, beautiful. He is beyond doting to her and loves showing her off when they're out."
“Scarlett loves Colin too, and they are in it for the long haul. They have talked about marriage and are fully committed to each other," the source continued. "Colin gets a starry-eyed look in his eyes when he talks about her."
Marcel Pariseau, a representative for Johansson, announced that the two are engaged. Pariseau noted that the two hadn't yet chosen a date for a wedding.
A source told People, "Scarlett likes Colin’s sarcasm and wit. They share a love for acerbic humor and outrage at social issues gone bad. They have much in common."
According to Page Six, Jost opened up about the engagement during a benefit show in the Hamptons.
"I'm getting married, and it’s such a crazy thing," he said during his time at the mic. "I was so scared of marriage for so long because every time I talked to someone who just got married, or was about to get married, is like, 'Oh my god, you got to do it ... What could go wrong?' Then you talk to someone who’s been married for five years, and they’re like, 'Don't rush into it ... you have your whole life ahead of you. Don’t have kids. They’re the worst.'"
Johansson revealed more details about her engagement during a stop on Ellen.
"He killed it," she said. "He's very charming and very thoughtful and romantic. But yeah, I was surprised. Even if you kind of imagine what that moment's gonna be like, it's still a beautiful moment. I think, more than anything, when someone tells you they want to spend their life with you, that's a lovely, special thing."
Johansson says that Jost is the love of her life during her sixth appearance as host of SNL.
"This place means so much to me. I have so many friends here and I met the love of my life here," she said.
The couple attends the Golden Globe and SAG Awards together.
