"Why so serious?" Charlene asked Tour de France participants, probably.

We respect a face mask-wearing quee—I mean, princess.

Princess Charlene of Monaco and her husband Prince Albert stepped out in Nice on Saturday to celebrate the start of the Tour de France. And while Albert, who has recovered after testing positive for COVID-19 in March, kept his preventative accessories simple — a white mask emblazoned with the phrase “#StrongTogether” in red and blue letters — Charlene decided to get, uh, creative?

The former Olympic swimmer opted for a colorful mask reading The Joker’s famous catchphrase “Why so serious?", a red slash below the words appearing to serve as the DC villain’s mouth, accentuated with makeup to mimic blood. Adding confusion to the already puzzling fashion choice, Charlene wore the mask upside down.

So … What does this mean? Bicyclists better watch out? Most likely, the mask is a nod to Charlene and Albert’s twins, Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques, who celebrated their fourth birthday in 2018 with a superhero-themed party. The Joker doesn’t seem like the most appropriate figure for a 5-year-old to follow, but maybe the twins’ interest in superheroes sent Charlene on a DC binge of her own? Perhaps she’s planning her Harley Quinn Halloween costume as we speak?

And the upside-down part? We’ll attribute that to pure human error — cloth masks are tricky!
