Why Prince William Is Teaming Up with Shakira and Cate Blanchett
The collaboration we never knew we needed.
Thanks in part to our new Zoom meeting-filled reality, 2020 has been the year of some interesting team-ups. Meghan Markle and Gloria Steinem! Miley Cyrus and Reese Witherspoon! Kendall Jenner and Jon Favreau! And now, Prince William, Shakira, and Cate Blanchett.
On Thursday, Kensington Palace released a video announcing the Duke of Cambridge's new environmental project, Earthshot, a global environment prize that is designed to incentivize change and help repair our planet over the next 10 years. The prize will award five people a year £1 million over the next 10 years, with the aim of having "at least 50 solutions to the world’s greatest environmental problems by 2030."
The Prince tapped some of his famous friends to help announce the news as well as assist in deciding the winners and recipients. In addition to Shakira and Blanchett, William is also working with Sir David Attenborough and Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan, amongst others.
During a Zoom call, Shakira told Prince William that being a mother has influenced her environmental activism.
"I personally feel this is my responsibility... as a mother of two young children to bring attention to this issue right now before it's too late," she said.
"All around the world, science and community-based initiatives are leading to ground-breaking inventions and solutions which, if provided with the platform and resources to be implemented on a larger scale, could have a significant and positive impact on the environment and global economy," Blanchett said of the project. "The Earthshot Prize aims to do just that, and by providing this vital platform, we hope to refocus the narrative on climate change to one of hope and action."
