Prince William Reportedly "Didn't Want to Go" to the Princess Diana Statue Unveiling

He was allegedly "furious" after Harry and Meghan's Oprah interview.

While everything seemed like it was just fine — stiff upper lips and all — when Prince William and Prince Harry gave the whole world its first look at the Princess Diana statue at Kensington Palace this past summer, things weren't so great between the bros leading up to the event. The Mirror reports that a friend of William and Harry said that the picture-perfect moment almost didn't happen because of the fallout after Harry and Meghan Markle's sit-down with Oprah Winfrey.

"William was still furious," the friend said. "He had taken the view that he'd only give so much. He just didn't want to go there [with Harry]."

William was reportedly so mad that he almost un-invited Harry to the event, but Kate Middleton stepped in and managed to smooth everything over.

She "worked her magic out of sight," another source added. "[Catherine] was amazing behind the scenes when Harry came."

Together, the princes released a statement that honored their late mother and didn't let even the most eagle-eyed royal fans know that anything had happened.

"Today, on what would have been our mother's 60th birthday, we remember her love, strength, and character — qualities that made her a force for good around the world, changing countless lives for the better," the statement read. "Every day, we wish she were still with us, and our hope is that this statue will be seen forever as a symbol of her life and her legacy."

Kate has often acted as something of a mediator between the brothers, Marie Claire reports. It was apparent when everyone got together for Prince Philip's funeral.

"She has tried to act as a bridge between William and Harry," royal commentator Angela Levin said. "There was [a] very bad feeling between H and W when H came over for the funeral of Prince Philip. Catherine started talking to H as they left the chapel. William joined her and she slowed down and let the two talk. I don't think either of them would have made the first move to speak to each other."
