Mindy Kaling might be a born and bred East Coaster, but she sure has taken to the easy, breezy L.A. way of life pretty quickly. The newly expectingMindy Project star, who splits her time between L.A. and N.Y.C., has been spending the summer at her sprawling villa in the City of Angels, and recently, she decided that her backyard needed a shot of signature SoCal chic. “In my New York home I have more of a cleaner aesthetic, like cream as the base of all the rooms with some pops of color,” says Kaling. “But my L.A. home is just full of color and is really gilded, inside and out.” Bearing that in mind, the actress turned to interior designer Katie Ridder and One Kings Lane to help bring her bold backyard vision to life. “I really admired Katie’s Instagram, and I fell in love with the way she uses colors, textures, prints, and patterns,” she says. "I felt like it had to be her." Now, with Ridder’s help, she has areas for both lounging (on couches or poolside) and dining al fresco, perfect for a summer full of entertaining. "I wanted a house with a lot of outdoor space so I could invite my writing staff over to barbecue and hang out,” she adds. "I have a giant dining table too, so I can have Nancy Meyers-style dinner parties out here... or that’s my fantasy anyway!” Keep scrolling to see Kaling’s brand new backyard and head over to One Kings Lane to pick up some of her cool furnishings for your next backyard bash.

Mindy Kaling is definately (as Wendy Williams would say), a friend in my head. She's a girl's girl, with a funny as heck TV show, The Mindy Project, and the ability to make any and every print charming and sassy. To celebrate Kaling's birthday, we've gathered some of our favorite printed looks from her red carpet appearances. Kaling has perfectly mastered dressing her curves, while not being afraid to try some of the most eye-catching patterns. From florals to abstract prints, she has it all down to a science. Here are a few cues from Kaling to remember. Emphasize your waist. If the motif is very busy, try adding a belt to keep the look from being overpowering. It nips in the waist and creates and hourglass shape. Not a fan of belts? Try going for a dress that has a drawstring, waistband, or a solid mid-section, to create a flattering silhouette. Be sure to keep your outfit as the primary focus, all accessories should be kept minimal, preferably in solid colors. Invest in a nude strap sandal that goes with anything, like these from Steve Madden. Scroll down to see Kaling's hits and shop similar styles you can rock today.
If you asked us to envision what Mindy Kaling’s home might look like, we would imagine something quite similar to the space that her character Mindy Lahiri on The Mindy Project lives in: colorful and pretty feminine. Upon taking a peek at her real N.Y.C. abode, we can confirm that the brilliant comedian/actress/author’s personal style is quite the opposite. “My home in New York is a more sophisticated and minimalist,” she says, but she didn’t pull this zen apartment all together on her own. When she was ready to update her East Coast residence, Kaling got some much-needed help—"I’m a very indecisive person,” she says—from decorator Sally Gotfredson and One Kings Lane. First, the actress had to draw up some inspiration and for that she looked to where else but Instagram. “My favorite sites to follow are One Kings Lane, the interior designer Katie Ridder, and a bunch of beautiful celebrities because sometimes they post the inside of their house and you can try to check out their style from stalking them online.” Then, she handed off her wish list to Gotfredson's team and let them do their thing. "I had the benefit of working in L.A. when they were decorating, which was great because I couldn’t micromanage, which would have driven them crazy. And also, I got to be surprised like in a reality television show when I walked in." Ocean's Eight just added another heavy-hitter to its ensemble cast. The Late Late Show host, Tony winner, and all-around funny man James Corden just signed on to the film, Deadline reports. Corden will reportedly play an insurance investigator who grows suspicious of the ladies' heist plot in N.Y.C. (and probably tries to sabotage their illegal actions). The Into the Woods star will act in a supporting role alongside Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, and Awkwafina in the film, which is slated to hit theaters June 8, 2018. The ladies have been spotted filming around New York City in the most stylish of looks: [tiImage img-pos="1" image_style="684xflex" align="center"] Ocean's Eleven director Steven Soderbergh will return as a producer to the project, which will be directed by Gary Ross.
