On Tuesday, the singer celebrated the ethereal and beachy anthem's birthday by sharing some behind-the-scenes footage from recording the song. "Today is the 4 year anniversary of Malibu. A song about a place and person that at the time I loved very much," Cyrus wrote on Instagram alongside the video. She then referenced the home she shared with Liam Hemsworth that perished in the California wild fires in 2018. "That love was reciprocated beyond what I could describe here with freedom & escapism. I lost that home along with many others in 2018." Cyrus and Hemsworth's Malibu home was destroyed in the 2018 raging wildfires that devastated the West Coast. At the time, Hemsworth shared pictures of their burnt down home, showing the wreckage from the flames. A symbolic "love" sign seemed to be all that was recognizable in the scorched remains. "Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what's best while they both focus on themselves and careers," a rep for Cyrus told People.
