Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Just Signed a Netflix Deal
The news comes after reports that they've been pitching projects in Hollywood.
Since arriving in Los Angeles, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry seem to be settling just fine into L.A. life. Biking in Malibu? Check. A new house in Santa Barbara? Check. Backyard chats with other influential famous people? Check.
Their latest move, however, might be the most L.A. of them all: a Netflix deal.
Variety reports that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have signed a new, multi-year deal at Netflix to make documentaries, feature films, scripted television shows, and children’s series. The news comes after reports that Meghan and Harry were pitching different projects around Hollywood.
"Our lives, both independent of each other, and as a couple have allowed us to understand the power of the human spirit: of courage, resilience, and the need for connection," Meghan and Harry said in a statement. "Through our work with diverse communities and their environments, to shining a light on people and causes around the world, our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope. As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us, as is powerful storytelling through a truthful and relatable lens. We are pleased to work with Ted [Sarandos, co-chief executive officer and chief content officer for Netflix] and the team at Netflix whose unprecedented reach will help us share impactful content that unlocks action."
The news isn't a huge surprise — last month, it was reported that Prince Harry would be contributing to the upcoming Netflix documentary Rising Phoenix, which tells the story of the Paralympics.
Not to mention, upon the Sussexes' exit from royal life, there was plenty of speculation they may follow in the footsteps of another power couple who left public office: the Obamas. In 2018, Barack and Michelle Obama signed a Netflix production deal and have produced several projects, such as the Oscar-winning doc American Factory.
