Meghan Markle Is the First Modern Royal to Vote in a National Election

Once again, Meghan Markle is making royal history.

According to sources who’ve spoken to Newsweek, the Duchess of Sussex “is voting” in the U.S. election, making her the first member of the modern royal family to vote in a national election.

While one of Newsweek’s sources would not provide details as to when and how she’s voting/has voted, they confirmed her participation. "I'm not going to get into methods or timing, but can confirm that the duchess is voting in this election,” the source shared.

It’s possible that the other royal American from recent history, King Edward VII’s wife, Duchess of Windsor Wallis Simpson, voted in a U.S. election, but, according to People, it’s unknown if she ever did.

Markle’s husband, Prince Harry, isn’t an American citizen and thus unable to vote in today’s election. Being a member of the royal family since birth (political neutrality is something of a Windsor tradition), he’s never voted in the U.K. either.

Both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex encouraged Americans to vote in a video for the Time 100 back in September.

“When we vote, our values are put into action and our voices are heard. Your voice is a reminder that you matter, because you do and you deserve to be heard,” the duchess told viewers.

“It’s time to not only reflect, but act,” Harry added. “As we approach this November, it’s vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity."
