Megan Thee Stallion Calls to "Protect Black Women" in Powerful SNL Performance

Megan Thee Stallion made the most out of her Saturday Night Live debut, delivering a performance unlike no other. Pulling double duty, the rapper not only crushed her "Savage" set, but also advocated for the protection of Black women during the show's 46th season premiere.

In the middle of the song, an interlude of gunfire and the voices of Malcom X and activist Tamika Mallory took over the soundstage. Standing in formation, Meg and her dancers listened on, as Mallory called out Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron for his handling of the Breonna Taylor case, in which only one officer was charged for his role in her death: "Daniel Cameron is no different than the sell-out negroes who sold our people into slavery."

Meg then hopped onto the microphone, explaining to the audience, "We need to protect our Black women and love our Black women, ‘cause at the end of the day, we need our Black women.” She added, "We need to protect our Black men and stand up for our Black men, ‘cause at the end of the day, we’re tired of seeing hashtags about Black men.”

The message is similar Meg's tweets after she was shot by Tory Lanez this summer, and was subsequently bullied and harassed over the incident on social media.

"Black women are so unprotected & we hold so many things in to protect the feelings of others w/o considering our own," she wrote at the time. "It might be funny to y’all on the internet and just another messy topic for you to talk about but this is my real life and I’m real life hurt and traumatized."

Lanez was arrested for his involvement in the shooting and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 13.
