Kristen Stewart Felt "Spooky, Spiritual" Feelings While Playing Princess Diana

"There were times where I was like, 'Oh, God,' almost like she was, you know, trying to break through."

Pablo Larraín's Spencer is the talk of the season — and it's not even out yet.

Kristen Stewart, who portrays Princess Diana in the film, recently spoke to the L.A. Times about stepping into the late royal's shoes and the "spooky, spiritual feelings" on set.

Stewart acknowledged the difficulty of playing someone who is no longer alive and shared that she would "fully break down" multiple times per week over Diana's 1997 death.

"I just could not come to terms with it," she told the publication, "because I was fighting to keep her alive every single day."

Still, the princess's spirit (or someone's spirit?) felt present at times.

"I felt some spooky, spiritual feelings making this movie," Stewart admitted. "I felt like there were moments where I kind of got the sign-off."

Regardless, Stewart was careful not to overstep. "It's scary to tell a story about someone who's not alive anymore and who already felt so invaded," she said. "I never wanted to feel like we were invading anything, just that we were kind of adding to the multiplicity of a beautiful thing."

"She felt so alive to me when I was making this movie, even if it's all between the ears and it was just a fantasy of mine," she went on. "But there were moments where my body and mind would forget she was dead. And suddenly, I would just have an image of what happened. And remember who she left behind. And I was amazed by the renewed emotion. Every single time."

The cycle of grief itself "felt spiritual" for the actress. "There were times where I was like, 'Oh, God,' almost like she was, you know, trying to break through. It was weird. And amazing. I've never felt anything like it in my life."

Diana passed away in a tragic car accident in Paris 24 years ago. Her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, recently celebrated their mother's 60th birthday with the unveiling of a new statue made in her likeness.

Spencer will debut in theaters Nov. 5.
