Justin Bieber's Former Hillsong Pastor Was Fired For Being "Unfaithful" in His Marriage
Justin Bieber's former Hillsong Church spiritual advisor, Pastor Carl Lentz, was terminated on Wednesday.
In a statement issued to People, Hillsong founder Brian Houston shared, "Today Hillsong Church East Coast advised our congregation that we have terminated the employment of Pastor Carl Lentz." Though details were not given for the reason behind the said firing, Houston added, "This action was not taken lightly and was done in the best interests of everyone, including Pastor Carl."
On Thursday, Lentz opened up about his termination on Instagram. "When you accept the calling of being a pastor, you must live in such a way that it honors the mandate," he wrote. "That it honors the church, and that it honors God. When that does not happen, a change needs to be made and has been made in this case to ensure that standard is upheld."
Lentz went on to explain that he'd been "unfaithful in my marriage," adding, "I now begin a journey of rebuilding trust with my wife, Laura and my children and taking real-time to work on and heal my own life and seek out the help that I need."
Lentz is perhaps best known for his connection to Bieber, one of Hillsong's most famous parishioners. The pastor and Bieber were close — the singer even stayed with Lentz at his New Jersey home for a period in 2014. Bieber was also famously baptized by the pastor (in an NBA player's bathtub ... ).
While it's unclear where Bieber and Lentz currently stand, TMZ reported in 2018 that the two had a "major falling out."
