John Legend Revealed Exactly How That Surprise Pregnancy Reveal Went Down

He and Chrissy Teigen shocked fans earlier this summer when they announced they were expecting their third child together.

John Legend is opening up about his and Chrissy Teigen's surprise pregnancy reveal earlier this summer.

On Thursday, Legend joined Blackprint Meredith to discuss his new album Bigger Love and revealed how the music video for his single "Wild" (during which he and Teigen revealed they are expecting their third child) came about.

The singer told People editor Janine Rubenstein that Teigen's pregnancy was a "surprise" for them both: "We’ve talked about having fertility struggles, and both our first two babies were a result of IVF — we just didn’t think we could have a baby the old-fashioned way, honestly."

Legend added that he and Teigen weren't trying for a baby at the time, telling Rubenstein, "we were just in quarantine and spending a lot more time together and here we are."

When it came to the music video, he said, it was Teigen's idea to sneak in the surprise pregnancy reveal.

"She was hedging her bets because we were early in the pregnancy and hadn’t taken all the tests," he said. "She said, 'let’s just shoot it, and when we get back home, we can have more tests, and by the time the video is edited, we could decide whether or not to use that scene.'"

Afterward, he said, "All the tests came back great, and everything was healthy and good so we knew it wouldn’t be too early to tell people we were pregnant by that point. By the time the edit was done, we were comfortable telling people."

In the "Wild" music video, Teigen can be seen in one shot holding her stomach, leading shocked fans to aptly guess that it hinted at a pregnancy.

Teigen later opened up about finding out she was pregnant, telling fans that she was unknowingly pregnant during a breast implant removal surgery.

"I did the routine pregnancy test you do before surgery. It said negative. It was not negative," she wrote, adding: "A few weeks after surgery, I took a test. And for many years now, I've taken pregnancy tests almost every month, praying to see a positive one day. Just wishful thinking. I never had a positive before."

She added that she didn't think she could get pregnant naturally, which made her think the "odds" of carrying the baby without complications were low.

"So we prayed to the boob surgery gods that everything would be okay. Went to every appointment terrified," she said. "But what they say so often can be true. When you give up on trying, life has a way of surprising you."
