Javicia Leslie Will Be the First Black Batwoman on Television
Leslie will star in season 2 of the series following Ruby Rose's exit.
Less than two months after Ruby Rose’s departure from The CW’s Batwoman was announced, the series has found its new star: Javicia Leslie.
“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,” Leslie wrote in a statement.
Season 2 of the series will pick up with Leslie’s new character, Ryan Wilder. Like Rose’s character, Kate Kane, Wilder is an out lesbian, but that’s seemingly where the similarities end. Wilder is described as "nothing like Kate Kane,” and notably “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed.”
Rose reacted to news of Leslie’s casting on Wednesday evening, writing on Instagram, “OMG!! This is amazing!! I am so glad Batwoman will be played by an amazing Black woman. ❤️ I want to congratulate Javicia Leslie on taking over the bat cape. You are walking into an amazing cast and crew. I can’t wait to watch season 2 you are going to be amazing !! ❤️”
Leslie responded to the news on social media as well, writing, "For all of the little black girls dreaming to be a superhero one day... it’s possible!"
Batwoman’s sophomore season is expected to premiere in Jan. 2021, though it may very well be delayed due to the pandemic.
