For a woman, there is possibly no greater style influence than her mother. Just think, whose lipstick were you painting all over your face and whose stilettos were you trying on during those transformative years growing up? And for many, this influence didn't just extend to the teenage years, but still has profound effects today. Just like us, celebrities have taken these mother-daughter lessons to heart. One look at supermodel Cindy Crawford and her daughter Kaa Gerber, and you'll notice more than a mere resemblance. Crawford's sartorial stylings have clearly been passed down; case in point: her love of polished, but edgy, motorcycle jackets. Kate Hudson is yet another example, channeling her mother Goldie Hawn's youthful spirit through bohemian separates, like long flowing maxidresses. In advance of Mother's Day, we took a look at nine celebrity mother-daughter duos, and broke down the style lessons they share. Below, our findings.
It’s an age-old question: Is it okay to get romantically involved with your co-worker? Many an expert has voiced an opinion, but we have the final say, straight from Hollywood’s biggest stars. From Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan, lasting couples have been the product of fated movie castings. But rather than heat it up on set, these stars kept it professional until filming wrapped. Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn met while filming The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, but their romance truly heated up after co-starring in 1984's Swing Shift, while Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher formed a lasting friendship that blossomed into a relationship many years later. Here are 8 celebrity couples that have casting directors to thank for their IRL romances.
There’s no denying that Kate Hudson knows how to have a good time, so to celebrate the release of her inspirational lifestyle book Pretty Happy, ($16; amazon.com),the 36-year-old co-founder of stylish fitness brand Fabletics hosted an epic dinner for family and friends last week inside West Hollywood’s Gracias Madre restaurant. The newly cemented author, who rocked a printed black-and-white slip dress to her event because she felt it was a “good mix of fancy but casual,” was beaming as she arrived at the soiree. “I’m just so excited… I haven’t really done a celebration for my book and my company together to celebrate everything that’s happening right now,” she gushed to InStyle. “It’s really fun. All the people that have been so supportive and a huge part of what allow me to be able to create these things, they’re all here.” One of those people was her vivacious mom Goldie Hawn, who playfully posed for photos with her (and even kicked up her heels) in a coordinating blue slip dress before heading inside. “I’m extremely proud of my daughter,” she told us. “She’s done amazing work. She’s worked on herself, which I think is important. I think that’s probably the most important, and she’s passing on a beautiful message. I’m really excited about it.” Hudson’s stepfather, Kurt Russell, also attended the bash, as did her pals Nicole Richie, Tobey Maguire’s jewelry designer wife Jennifer Meyer, and Molly Sims. Rachel Zoe even managed to make it there after someone spilled Champagne all over her dress at her store launch event earlier that evening. And they did. As guests mingled on the intimate outdoor patio amidst the glow of white candles and exotic burgundy and white floral arrangements (inspired by the colors of Hudson’s book cover), they noshed on build-your-own mushroom and zucchini tacos, butternut squash quesadillas, and more at buffet-style wooden picnic tables. Hudson and her bestie Meyer couldn’t get enough of the guacamole and chips at the bash, and while there were three signature cocktails—the Fabrita, the Pretty Happy, and the Love Always—the Mother's Day star stuck with Fabritas throughout the night. Sims was also a big fan of the Fabritas, while Richie and Zoe opted for glasses of Sauvignon Blanc instead. Aside from the food and cocktails, guests were obsessed with the photo booth and couldn’t stop taking photos in it. Hudson had a full on photo booth shoot, rocking floral crowns and “pretty” and “happy” signs with Richie in one, and hugging Meyer in another. Sims also stepped into the photo booth, posing with a couple of girlfriends in her sheer black dress. Before Hudson’s friends headed out, they took home some Fabletics swag. For Zoe and husband Rodger Berman, it was a pair of Bonded joggers for him, and a Diana bomber jacket and Neema top for her. When I heard news that Goldie Hawn may play Amy Schumer's mom in an upcoming comedy, I was over the moon! Goldie is one of the most lovable female comedians of all time, right up there with Lucille Ball, in my book. Overboard, Private Benjamin, Foul Play, The First Wives Club, Cactus Flower, Shampoo, not to mention Laugh-in—I may have to spend a day binge-watching them all. I immediately googled photos of Goldie over the years and noticed that one of her signature looks is bare shoulders. The “cold-shoulder” look has been embraced by women of all ages and figures for decades. Think Jennifer Beals’s sweatshirt in Flashdance in 1983, Hillary Clinton’s Donna Karan gown at the White House in 1993. The look is sexy, feminine, and—let’s be honest—shoulders are an area that tend to “hold up” over time.
