Glee Star Naya Rivera Believed to Have Drowned After Extensive Search
Her 4-year-old son was found alone on the boat they had taken out.
UPDATE July 9, 2020, 6:30 EDT: During a press conference, the Ventura County Sheriff's Department announced that approximately 100 personnel were at Lake Piru searching for Naya Rivera. Resources from neighboring counties have joined the search team as well as the United States Coast Guard. However, according to an incident report, "investigators believe Rivera drowned in what appears to be a tragic accident."
"Approximately 50 sheriff’s personnel, along with a helicopter, boat crews, divers, and unmanned aerial vehicles searched the lake for five hours Wednesday evening, but Rivera could not be found. The entire shoreline and surface of the lake were thoroughly searched. Divers also searched under water in the area where the boat had last been seen. However, there was no sign of Rivera," the report reads.
According to NBC4 Los Angeles, Rivera, who played Santana Lopez on the hit show, had rented a boat on Lake Piru in Ventura County, California. Another boater found her 4-year-old son alone on the boat wearing his life jacket. There was an adult life jacket still in the boat which is suspected to be Rivera's. Her son, who she shares with ex-husband Ryan Dorsey, is reportedly in good health and with family. As of Thursday morning, the search for her has resumed but authorities say she is presumed dead and the search is now a "recovery mission."
Former costars and friends posted messages calling for prayers and hope. Heather Morrison posted, "We need all the prayers we can get to bring our Naya back home to us. We need your love and light." Another costar, Harry Shum Jr. wrote, "Praying."
Demi Lovato also posted on Instagram, "Please pray for Naya Rivera to be found safe and sound."
On Tuesday, Rivera had posted a sweet photo of her and son with the caption, "Just the two of us."
