Ellen DeGeneres's first episode of the month kicked off with guest Justin Bieber — and a fairly awkward line of questioning she had for him about his and wife Hailey Bieber's personal family plans. During the episode, which airs Tuesday, DeGeneres asked Bieber, "How many kids are you going to have and when?" "I'm going to have as many as Hailey is wishing to push out," he said. "I’d love to have myself a little tribe. But, yeah, it's her body and whatever she wants to do." "Does she want a lot?" DeGeneres asked. "I think she wants to have a few," Bieber responded. "What are you all waiting for?" the host asked. "You know you love kids. You’re so good with kids. What’s the holdup?" Bieber, for his part, thanked DeGeneres for saying he's "so good with kids" before pausing to answer the (very personal) question. "I think the issue — there's not really an issue, but I think Hailey still has some things she wants to accomplish as a woman," he said. "And I think she just wants to—yeah, I think she just is not ready yet, and I think that's okay." "I think that’s fantastic," DeGeneres replied. "You know what? I was hoping that was the answer. I know how much you love kids, and you’re going to be a such great dad, but I think that’s so important. How old is she?" "I think she is 24," he said. "She should wait until she is ready and get everything done she wants to get done," she told him. Bieber isn't the first person to have faced the hot seat on DeGeneres's show about whether or not he's having children. Earlier this year, Mariah Carey opened up about an "extremely uncomfortable" time she had during an interview on the show in which DeGeneres brought out champagne for Carey (who was rumored to be pregnant) and wouldn’t take no for an answer when she declined to drink it. "You’re pregnant!" DeGeneres shouted as Carey took a mock sip. Soon after her appearance, Carey had a miscarriage. Ellen DeGeneres Addressed Allegations of Workplace Misconduct on Her Show "I was extremely uncomfortable with that moment is all I can say. And I really have had a hard time grappling with the aftermath," Carey said in an interview. "I wasn’t ready to tell anyone because I had had a miscarriage. I don’t want to throw anyone that’s already being thrown under any proverbial bus, but I didn’t enjoy that moment." "[There is] an empathy that can be applied to those moments that I would have liked to have been implemented," she continued. "But what am I supposed to do?"
