8 Stars Who Love to Channel Their Inner Surfer Girl
If you’ve seen Blue Crush, you already know there’s nothing cooler than a surfer girl. And while we can all channel those effortless beach vibes with our salt sprays and shimmery bronzers, there is a little-known circle of Hollywood elite that actually hang ten on the regular.
Among them and a handful of supermodels, like Gisele Bündchen, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Carolyn Murphy, who told InStyle earlier this summer that being on the board is indeed her happy place. “The ocean is so meditative,” said Murphy (below), who has surfed competitively since the age of 9 while growing up in Florida.
Actresses have been riding the waves too, like Oscar nominee Margot Robbie, who hopped on a board in Costa Rica just last month, and Cameron Diaz, who has been perfecting the art of the rock-hard surf bod since her Charlie’s Angels days. Diaz has said that the beach is one of her favorite ways to spend the lazy days of summer. “I know I’ve been in the sun too long when I’ve lost track of time,” she told us in 2014.
While Murphy’s go-to surf spot is Montauk, N.Y., Diaz is often seen on her board in Malibu, where the sunny surf season doesn’t end after Labor Day. Many year-round resorts in the area even offer packages geared toward every kind of surfer girl well into the fall.
Our favorite? The Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows in Santa Monica, where in addition to a picturesque beachside stay, guests can opt into the Miramar to Malibu experience, which includes surf lessons for two from the beloved Malibu Surf Shack, a picnic lunch from Fig Restaurant, and a chic rash guard from Vilebrequin.
Any surfer girl would approve — just make sure you don’t steal Diaz’s swell when you’re out there. Keep scrolling to get inspired by our favorite star surfers.
The 28-year-old Aussie hopped on her board like a pro during a trip to Costa Rica in July, but things haven’t always gone so smoothly in the water. Robbie also posted a paparazzi shot of herself from 2016, falling off of her board in Hawaii. “Photo cred to the creepy pap hiding in the bushes. Thanks for always catching me at my best angles,” she playfully ‘grammed.
A longtime surfer, Diaz has hit the waves everywhere from Malibu Beach to Waikiki, even showing off her moves in Charlie’s Angels. The only thing at the beach that’s better than surfing, according to Diaz? “Finding a shady spot to nap,” she told InStyle in 2014.
Surf boards aren’t just for hanging ten. RiRi caught some sun and some much needed R&R on the water while she was vacationing in Hawaii.
Gerber tapped into her inner Kate Bosworth on Instagram, captioning this pre-surf shot, “Blue Crush was about me.” The supermodel also spent time this summer wakesurfing in Muskoka, Canada, alongside mom Cindy Crawford and the rest of her family.
It’s hard to tell, but Michele is relatively new to the surf game. The former Glee star first took lessons in 2014 while on holiday in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Only Bündchen could perfect the art of surf yoga (as seen on her Instagram) and still look amazing doing it. When she’s ready to take on a swell? QB hubby Tom Brady is often cheering her on.
Turns out, Ambrosio rocks a wet suit just as well as she does a bikini. The Brazilian model — and longtime surfer — has made waves everywhere from Waikiki to the Bahamas to Malibu Beach.
