Britney Spears Has Wanted to End Her Conservatorship Since 2014

New court documents were released ahead of her virtual appearance tomorrow.

Britney Spears is set to make a virtual appearance in court tomorrow to discuss the state of her conservatorship, but today, new court documents were released indicating that she's wanted major changes to the arrangement since 2014. The New York Times reports that Spears, who has been under a conservatorship for the last 13 years, was repeatedly pushed to end it without any success.

"She articulated she feels the conservatorship has become an oppressive and controlling tool against her," an investigator wrote in a 2016 report, according to the NYT. The outlet notes that Spears mentioned that she wanted the conservatorship terminated. "She is 'sick of being taken advantage of' and she said she is the one working and earning her money but everyone around her is on her payroll."

Even before that, in 2014, Spears mentioned that she wanted to end the arrangement. According to Entertainment Tonight, she allegedly spoke with her lawyer Samuel Ingham about "changing her lifestyle and retiring," but believed that her conservatorship would keep that from happening.

Spears stated that she felt a "serious opposition to the conservatorship earlier and more often than had previously been known" in the court records. She also claimed that it was too controlling, with stipulations on everything from "whom she dated to the color of her kitchen cabinets."

Her father, Jamie Spears, has been involved with her conservatorship it was instated, though recent years have seen changes made to the arrangement. Professionally licensed conservator Jodi Montgomery was appointed as temporary conservator of Spears's person back in 2019 while Jamie maintained conservatorship of Spears's estate.

Last February, a judge ruled that Jamie and Bessemer Trust Company have equal power over Britney's finances. Britney's mother, Lynne Spears, expressed in November 2020 that Britney and Jamie's relationship was "toxic" and that it was "time to start fresh."
