Britney Spears Called Out Her Tear-Filled 2003 Interview With Diane Sawyer

Late Monday evening, Britney Spears posted a series of notes to her Instagram Stories that slammed ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer. The two famously had a sit-down for Primetime in the aftermath of Spears's breakup with Justin Timberlake. It all took place in Spears's N.Y.C. apartment and in the since-deleted posts, Spears claims that her father set her up and that she wasn't ready to speak about the trauma of her breakup — and, in fact, she had actually lost her voice before the interview with Sawyer.

"Do we dare forget the Diane Sawyer interview in my apartment almost 20 years ago?" she wrote in the opening note, which People screencapped. "What was with the 'You're in the wrong' approach?? Geeze ... and making me cry???"

The notes continued, reading, "Seriously though ... I lived in my apartment for a year and never spoke to anyone ... my manager put that woman in my home and made me talk to her on national television and she asked if I had a shopping problem!!! when did I have a shopping problem?"

The notes went on to say that Sawyer approached the entire interview insisting that Spears was to blame for the 2002 breakup, not touching on the fact that she was still "in shock" and couldn't speak. Spears said that she "never spoke to anyone for a very long time" post-Justin and that her father Jamie forced her to talk to Sawyer.

"Something I never shared when I had that breakup years ago was that I couldn't talk afterward," she wrote. "I was in shock ... pretty lame of my dad and three men to show up at my door when I could hardly speak ... two days later they put Diane Sawyer in my living room ... they forced me to talk!"

Jamie Spears's lawyer, Alex Weingarten, denied the accusation, releasing a statement to People that noted Jamie had no involvement whatsoever with the sit-down.

"He had nothing to do with Britney's career at this point and was completely uninvolved in this interview. Jamie loves Britney very much, wishes Britney nothing but the best and hopes that she continues to seek the help that she needs to stay safe and healthy," the statement reads.

"She can kiss my white ass," Spears finished her note, but not until she added a few more choice words for Sawyer. "She said 'a woman or a girl,'" Spears wrote of how Sawyer addressed her during the interview. "I would like to say now, 'Ma'am I'm a catholic slut!!!'"
