"It's part of why I started drinking ... "

Ben Affleck got super candid about his past relationship with both alcohol and Jennifer Garner. On Monday, the actor appeared on the Howard Stern Show and opened up about his alcohol abuse while married to Garner.

"I'd probably still be drinking," he said to Stern. "It's part of why I started drinking … because I was trapped." He explained that he didn't want to give up on the three children he shares with Garner, Violet, 16, Seraphina, 12, and Samuel, 9.

"I was like 'I can't leave 'cause of my kids, but I'm not happy, what do I do?' What I did was drink a bottle of scotch and fall asleep on the couch, which turned out not to be the solution," he recalled.

Ultimately the two decided separating was the best decision for them and their kids. "The truth was, we took our time, we made the decision … We grew apart," the actor explained to Stern.

"We had a marriage that didn't work, this happens, with somebody that I love and respect, but to whom I shouldn't be married any longer," he continued. "We tried, we tried because we had kids. Both of us felt like we don't want this to be the model that our kids see of marriage."

The two originally wed in 2005 before separating in 2015. Affleck previously spent time in rehab for his addiction in 2001, 2017, and 2018 when he and Garner finalized their divorce.

Garner and Affleck appear to be friendly exes, they're often seen spending time together with their kids. Garner even joined Ben and his new girlfriend Jennifer Lopez on Halloween to trick-or-treat with the children.

Affleck also shared that he was hesitant to rekindle his romance with Lopez because of his "responsibility" to his kids. "I don't want to do anything that is painful or destructive to them if I can help it," he said.
