Barack Obama Went on TikTok for the Best Reason
You can duet with him with the Pass the Book challenge.
In a dose of very good news, former President Barack Obama hopped on TikTok — and though he's not doing a viral dance or cosplaying as a superhero, he is urging everyone on the platform to read a book. Obama featured in a post from publishing imprint Penguin Teen to promote his memoir, A Promised Land.
"This book expresses the incredible hope I have in you. Take this and pass it on," he says in the clip before making a gesture to "pass" his book to another person (sure, he'd love you to pass his book, but we're sure he wouldn't mind passing other beloved books along to friends and family). Several users have already taken it upon themselves to duet his clip, which involves continuing the motion and grabbing the book, pretending that they're actually doing it instead of having it happen virtually.
"My goal was to give you some insight into the events and people that shaped me during the early years of my presidency," Obama wrote in a tweet explaining the release of his book. "Most of all, I hope it inspires you to see yourself playing a role in shaping a better world."
The TikTok video comes after Obama released a playlist to accompany the book, saying, "Music has always played an important role in my life—and that was especially true during my presidency."
The tunes include a wide range of genres and artists, including Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Beyoncé, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Eminem, Gloria Estefan, Fleetwood Mac, JAY-Z, Miles Davis, Phillip Phillips, The Beatles, Sade, Stevie Wonder, and U2.
