Adam Brody and Leighton Meester Won't Be Binging the New 'Gossip Girl'

Blair Waldorf has been there, done that.

While HBO Max's new Gossip Girl reboot is already giving fans heart palpitations and a reason to dust off their bejeweled headbands, Adam Brody and his wife, Blair Waldorf herself, Leighton Meester, are taking a more low-key approach to the news. In a new interview with WSJ. Magazine, Brody explained that while the duo won't be binging the show, they're not going to skip out on it altogether.

"I highly doubt we'll watch it front to back," Brody said. "I don't think we're the audience, but I'm sure we'll dip our toes in."

The "audience" is presumably younger (he's 41, she's 34) or viewers that remember Serena van der Woodsen and Waldorf's exploits, their iconic sit-downs on the steps of the Met, and the over-the-top storylines that involved fake deaths, extravagant balls, and the dueling dynamics that come with crossing the Brooklyn Bridge. And by the looks of the new show — the paparazzi are already snapping the new cast — things are going to be very, very different this time around at Constance Billard.

"[Original showrunner] Josh Safran has found a perfect partner in Karena [Evans, who's set to direct] to illustrate how the landscape of social media, the Upper East Side, and the world have changed since Gossip Girl premiered 13 years ago," Sarah Aubrey, head of HBO Max's original content, said in a statement. "Additionally, her passion for inclusive storytelling matches Josh's and we are proud to have her on this journey with us."

Brody also told the WSJ that he's been happy to leave his acting career on a low simmer and just hang with his daughter, Arlo, and new son. "We've been in a cocoon for going on a year," he said. "We're incredibly fortunate with the amount of flexibility in work."

That work includes a role in Shazam! and, more recently, Ready or Not The Kid Detective, and Promising Young Woman. And though the new Gossip Girl isn't on the couple's queue, he did give fans a look into what they two do watch, just in case anyone wants to know what Seth Cohen and Blair Waldorf are soaking in.

"We just finished The Reagans, I enjoyed that," he said. "We watched Mank, the Fincher movie, last night. We watched The Crown, The Vow, [and] Moonbase 8, which I thought was kind of sweet, lovely."
