Taraji P. Henson's Afro Is Here to Remind You She's Proud AF to Be Black

Taraji P. Henson is here to tell you something: she's a Black woman before anything else, and she's proud of the skin she's in.

While the actress has always been vocal about both Black excellence and the racial disparities the Black community faces, she's made no qualms about going the extra mile as of late.

Since George Floyd and Breonna Taylor were both killed by police officers earlier this year, Henson has been actively using her social media platforms to educate her audience on systemic racism and police brutality to help fight for justice.

But don't get it twisted — although the Black community is hurting, our resilience has always outweighed everything that's worked against us. And the actress couldn't be more proud of her brown skin and the coily hair that grows from her roots.

On June 14, Henson shared a photo of her perfectly picked-out red hot Afro on Instagram. She captioned the photo, "Hair that defies gravity!!! Hair that grows towards the heavens." She also added in the hashtags "#BlackandProud #BlackLivesMatter #RockYourFro #PickoutYourFro and #ThrowUpYourFist."

The next day, Henson shared another post with her Afro on full display. This time, it was a video of her picking out her hair with James Brown's "Say It Loud – I'm Black and I'm Proud" playing in the background, a very fitting added touch.

Henson first revealed her red Afro back in February, but the star has long been a fan of showing off the versatility of natural hair as an act of resistance.

"For so long we have been told that our hair in its natural state is ugly, or it’s nappy or it’s been given these horrible descriptions," Henson told InStyle back in January. "How can we fight what is naturally ours? Embrace it. Our hair defies gravity, think about that. Our hair points to the heavens, that’s powerful."
