When David Yi founded men's beauty website Very Good Light in 2016, he wanted to create an online space that redefines masculinity. Five years later, Yi is continuing to push the binary boundaries of the beauty industry with Good Light, a gender-inclusive skincare line.

"I never felt represented or a part of the beauty industry because here's someone who likes to shave and do grooming and beard oils, but I also love sheet masks and putting on makeup." Yi tells InStyle over Zoom. "In 2016, I felt like we were still stuck in the idea of men or masc-intentifying folks having to be a certain way and use certain products, and women or femme-identifying folks having their own products. None of the beauty aisles represent me. They're either hyper masculine or hyper feminine and I never felt like I belonged in any beauty aisle. So, I started Very Good Light with the mission to redefine masculinity."

Yi partnered with Michael Engert, Supergoop's former head of direct to consumer on Good Light, and took feedback from the Very Good Light community in consideration when creating the line. After two years of research and formula development, the brand is launching with a trio of products: Cosmic Dew Water Cleanser, Moon Glow Milky Toning Lotion, and We Come in Peace Probiotic Serum.

"Growing up in Colorado Springs, Co., I felt like I was always so alone being the only Asian kid. I never wanted young people to feel this way, so I wanted this to be a dedication of my life's work as a journalist to tell stories that weren't being told," Yi says. "I always had in mind that I wanted to create a beauty brand so people can feel empowered and part of the beauty industry and a community."

Good Light is vegan, cruelty-free, and formulated without any of the 1,300 banned ingredients from the European Union. The products are available direct-to-consumer at

All three product formulas are designed with all skin types in mind, and are anti-inflammatory and pH-balanced to help hydrate, soothe, protect, and calm skin. When used together, Good Light's lineup will help promote the skin barrier function.
