Hourglass' New Lengthening Mascara Is Like Lash Extensions in a Tube
It does not smudge.
My quarantine makeup routine has been minimal at best.
Even on days when I have a ton of Zoom calls, I rarely go beyond applying some concealer and tinted lip balm.
Pre-coronavirus, I used to find the methodical way I applied my makeup every morning to be a calming, grounded way to start my day. Now, going through a full routine seems frivolous. Not to mention, I've been letting my skin breathe because I've been in hormonal breakout hell since stay-at-home orders started. But, that's another story.
So, right now, a product needs to be ridiculously good in order for me to take the extra effort to apply it.
Enter Hourglass' Unlocked Instant Extensions Mascara, which has been making me look forward to wearing makeup again.
Like the name says, the brand's newest mascara is meant to instantly give lashes as much length as you would get from lash extensions. The vegan formula also defines and lifts lashes, thanks to a special film-forming tubing technology that coats each lash with smudge-proof fibers. As for the brush, it has rubber bristles that capture every single lash.
To buy: $29; sephora.com.
I've never tried lash extensions, because the aftercare and the risk of potentially damaging my natural lashes doesn't make it seem like it's worth the trouble. However, I want whatever mascara I use to make my lashes to look as long as they would if I did get extensions.
Upon first applying Unlocked Instant Extensions, I was extremely impressed. My lashes looked like they were long enough to reach above my eye crease, super voluminous, and the color of black velvet. Admittedly, I forgot I was wearing mascara and left it on while I did a virtual workout. I was dripping in sweat afterwards, but I came out of it without raccoon eyes.
While the mascara doesn't flake or rub off, it is easy to remove with warm water or an oil-based eye makeup remover. (I use a cotton round soaked with Glossier's Milky Oil and get it all off with minimal rubbing.)
But lashes of my dreams aside, I can also get behind the charitable initiative connected to this mascara. As part of Hourglass' Unlocked line, 5% of sales from Instant Extensions Mascara will go to the NonHuman Rights Project, the only civil rights organization in the US that supports the rights of non-human animals.
