In case you forgot that Beyoncé Knowles-Carter is a walking goddess, let me just remind you that the woman has the glowiest skin, the most glamorous mane of hair, and the best outfit every time she steps out. This writer, on the other hand, is nowhere near Beyoncé’s within-reach-of-the-sun kind of perfection that, if one were to get too close, might get them burned instead. But hey, a girl can dream.

And in my pursuit to find out exactly what Beyoncé uses to look so flawless, I realized that there was one tiny item I carry with me every day that brings me an inch closer to her: Smith’s Rosebud Salve. Let me explain to you how important this $7 lip balm is to me: Apart from the must-haves for me to live (phone, keys, and wallet), this incredibly hydrating salve is the only thing that I would be seriously tempted to actually contact a New York City subway worker to help me pick up if it ever slipped out of my hand and dropped on the tracks. Yes, it’s that good

What elevated this inconspicuous lip balm from ‘great’ to ‘holy grail’ can be best said in Queen Bey’s own words. In an interview with Allure in 2011, Beyoncé described how much she loved “the Rosebud Salve in the blue can.” “I wear it with my lipstick,” said the Lemonade singer who apparently used it to prime her lashes before curling. “It was like a natural mascara. It made the lashes hold the curl and look shiny. I use it for everything!" I mean, do you need a more compelling review?

If you do, though, here’s why I can’t live without Smith’s cult-favorite Rosebud Salve. For years, I’ve struggled with such parched, chapped lips that, no matter how much Vaseline I slathered on each night, they would just revert back to their bloody and cracked state. One morning, my lips were so dry that my Cupid’s bow literally split open like a walnut as I was brushing my teeth, leaving me to yelp so loudly that my roommate thought I had somehow bit my tongue.

I’ve tried nearly every lip balm under the sun to alleviate the dryness, and Smith’s Rosebud Salve is the only one that gives my parched skin the right amount of moisture without making it an oily mess. With this small tin, I no longer have to smear on layers and layers of Vaseline to achieve the same amount of hydration. Plus, its apothecary-inspired packaging certainly gives you the right to say that you got it somewhere way fancier than Sephora to those less eagle-eyed.

And if that isn’t enough to convince you, how about the fact that you can find Smith’s Rosebud Salve in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History? The Rosebud Perfume Company registered a patent for the salve in 1908, but the even more impressive news is that its prices have stayed relatively the same (one tin cost $0.25 in 1908, which roughly equates to $7 in 2020).
