Not so. Keri Hilson's chop is usually piecey and brushed across her forehead. To dress things up for the big night, the texture was smoother and the ends were gently curled. The result? Stunning red carpet strands. 02 of 20 Kristen Bell's Braided Bun Michael Tran/FilmMagic; Tsuni/Gamma THE STYLE A low bun wrapped with a textured braid WHERE The When in Rome premiere in Los Angeles INSIDE SCOOP "My goal was to make the hair look effortless butsophisticated," said hairstylist Craig Gangi, who created the look for Kristen Bell. For a similar look, Gangi advises setting the hair with texturizing spray before pulling it into a low ponytail. "Take a section of hair from the ponytail and braid it. Then twist the unbraided hair into a bun, wrap the braid around the bun and secure tightly," he says. 03 of 20 Hayden Panettiere Goes Red! Rob Kim/Retna THE STYLE Luxe auburn strands pulled into a sleek and wavy ponytail WHERE The premiere of Temple Grandin in New York City WHY WE LOVE IT Hayden Panettiere may be one of our favorite blonds-but she's also not afraid of changing up her hair. (Remember the bangs and the bob?) We have to admit, the red is working for her. We love the nearly-brunette undertones and the way she smartly touched-up her brows to match. 04 of 20 Naomi Watts's Winter Waves Sara Jaye Weiss/Startraks THE STYLE An above-the-shoulder bob styled in piecey, rumpled waves WHERE The Mother and Child post-premiere party at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, UT WHY WE LOVE IT Crisp, disheveled waves like Naomi Watts's may come easy in the summer months, but in the winter, you're going to have to break out some reinforcements. Our favorite fix? A double-pronged curling iron. It sounds crazy, but by weaving your hair through the tines, you'll be able to recreate natural curl formations-previously reserved for Mother Nature only. 05 of 20 Diane Kruger's Romantic Braid Frazer Harrison/Getty Images THE STYLE A chunky, textured side braid WHERE The 16th Annual Screen Actor's Guild Awards in Los Angeles INSIDE SCOOP A few things inspired the look stylist Mark Townsend created for Diane Kruger. "The dress and jewelry were hanging close by where we were doing hair and I was blown away by how beautiful they both were. Plus, Diane had a picture from a recent fashion show of a hairstyle she liked. I wanted to make the style right for her and for her dress," he said. After setting curls throughout the entire head with a small iron, he raked styling cream through to break up waves, and loosely braided the hair to one side. "I finished by pinning the end of the braid up behind her left ear and misting with hairspray," he said. 06 of 20 Beyonce's Long Fringe KCSPresse/Splash News THE STYLE Long straight strands with extra-dimensional highlights WHERE In Paris with Jay-Z WHY WE LOVE IT Beyonce is no stranger to switching up her hair, but this sleek style was particularly fresh. We love the multi-tonal highlights, the long, thick bangs, and the finely tapered ends. 07 of 20 Alicia Keys's Sleek Curls INF Photo THE STYLE Shiny and precise in front; carefree and curly in back WHERE A concert in Madrid, Spain WHY WE LOVE IT Curls don't always have to be unruly. Alicia Keys look is both polished and free-spirited. Plus, the sleekness and shape gracefully bring the focus to her face. 08 of 20 Kirsten Dunst's Pin-Up Waves uss Einhorn / Splash News THE STYLE Loose, tousled Veronica Lake-inspired waves WHERE The Art of Elysium Gala in Beverly Hills INSIDE SCOOP Kirsten Dunst is one of Hollywood's edgiest stars, which is exactly why hairstylist Cervando Maldonado knew she'd own this retro-inspired look. "I rough-dried the hair, then curled it section-by-section," he told us. He gathered each section into a pin curl, which he removed 15 minutes later when they were totally cool. "I brushed it out to create softness, and added a dab of styling cream to control frizz," he says. And one final tip: "Don't forget to add hairspray to hold your style!" 09 of 20 Minka Kelly's Pin-Straight Strands David Crotty/PatrickMcMullan.com/Sipa Press THE STYLE Sleek, super-straight hair parted slightly off center WHERE The Art of Elysium Charity Gala in Los Angeles WHY WE LOVE IT Lots of stars have been making waves with their looks, which is why Minka Kelly's sleek strands caught our eye. Notice how her auburn highlights really pop? When hair is flat-ironed, it seals the cuticle and presses out natural oils-which means shiny, dimensional hair color for you. 10 of 20 Penelope Cruz's Tumbling Waves Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage THE STYLE Cascading, pinned-back waves WHERE The 2010 Golden Globes in Beverly Hills INSIDE SCOOP To keep her style from falling flat in the rain, hairstylist Oribe started Penelope Cruz's look with a dose of humidity protecting spray. He worked through the hair with a curling iron, and brushed the loose spirals into place. "You want to accentuate the wave in the front and make sure it's really pronounced," he said. He clipped the wave in place, spritzed it with hairspray, and finished by pinning back the hair on the other side. 11 of 20 Kate Winslet's Textured Chignon Kevin Winter/Getty Images THE STYLE A low bun with plenty of texture and movement WHERE The 2010 Golden Globes in Beverly Hills INSIDE SCOOP "I wanted Kate Winslet to look like a glamorous woman with a slightly undone style," said Frederic Fekkai celebrity hairstylist Renato Campora, who created the look. He mixed mousse with glossing cream to rough-up the hair, then set the entire head in pin curls. After the curls had set, he gathered all the hair at the back of the neck, set it with bobby pins, and added a touch of shine serum. The final touch? "I bent the ends with a one-inch curling iron to make them pretty," he said. 12 of 20 Penelope Cruz's Off-Center Bun INF Photo THE STYLE A loopy cluster of hair pulled low and off to the side WHERE The Rome premiere of Nine WHY WE LOVE IT We saw loopy styles on the spring runways, but Penelope Cruz made them a reality. To try a similar style, part your hair deep on one side, and gather it on the other. Secure your strands with an elastic that matches your hair color, but don't pull them through the entire way. (To hide your ends, tuck them underneath your bunch of hair.) 13 of 20 Maggie Gyllenhaal's Semi-Structured Waves John Spellman/Retna THE STYLE A pert bob shaped into shiny, bendy, imperfect waves WHERE The 2010 National Board of Review of Motion Pictures Awards Gala in New York City WHY WE LOVE IT Maggie Gyllenhaal's look was a sweet reminder that curls aren't just for taming-they can also add instant volume and body to any cut. For irregular twists like these, wrap two inch sections around the barrel of a curling iron held vertically. Rolling the iron up horizontally yields too-perfect spirals. 14 of 20 Mila Kunis's '60s Ponytail Mike Giro/Retna THE STYLE A center-parted look gathered into a low, curly ponytail WHERE The Book of Eli premiere in Los Angeles INSIDE SCOOP TRESemmé stylist Mara Roszak applied styling mousse to Mila Kunis's damp hair, then blew it dry, adding a bit of height around the crown. She parted the hair in the middle, and separated the front and crown sections. She gathered the rest of the strands into a low ponytail, then twisted the reserved sections around the base of the elastic, securing with bobby pins. She curled the ends of the ponytail, and finished with a dose of shine spray. 15 of 20 Marion Cotillard's Mini Curls John Shearer/WireImage THE STYLE A chin-length bob styled in tiny, unruly ringlets WHERE A Dior hosted cocktail party at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles celebrating Nine WHY WE LOVE IT Aren't most of us caught up trying to tame natural texture? Marion Cotillard set aside the flat-iron and product arsenal, and instead embraced what was rightfully hers: wild, rowdy, luscious curls. 16 of 20 Katharine McPhee's Flapper Look Albert Michael/Startraks THE STYLE A short, voluminous 'do with an undeniable '20s edge WHERE An appearance on Fox and Friends in New York City WHY WE LOVE IT Katharine McPhee's short blond crop is fun, flirty, and flapper-ish. Our very favorite part? The way the bendy, unkempt curls keep it from feeling stiff like some structured styles. 17 of 20 Lea Michele's Barrel Curls Todd Williamson/WireImage THE STYLE Big tousled curls piled on one shoulder WHERE The 2010 People's Choice Awards in Los Angeles INSIDER SCOOP "The inspiration for Lea Michele's hair was film glamour because she has a Mediterranean, old Hollywood look," said her stylist Gio Campora. "Starting with damp hair, I blew it dry and separated it into bigger sections, which help create a curly wave, as opposed to tight curls." Campora spiraled each section with a 1-inch iron and finished with hairspray. His final touch? "I like keeping the hair to one side to shape the face," he said. 18 of 20 Amy Adams's Side-Swept Bangs Johns PkI / Splash News THE STYLE New (!) longish bangs pushed to the side WHERE The Late Show with David Letterman in New York City INSIDE SCOOP "I cut bangs on Amy Adams a few weeks ago, but her hair grows so fast so we trimmed them a bit shorter before her Letterman appearance," says stylist Mark Townsend. "I love how they turned out! They're fresh, flirty, and sexy." Craving a similar breezy bang look? Townsend advises asking your stylist for "an eyebrow-grazing length with long, face-framing layers." 19 of 20 Leighton Meester's Soft Waves THE STYLE Subtle, touchable, and bendy waves WHERE A party she hosted at TAO nightclub in Las Vegas WHY WE LOVE IT Don't get us wrong, we love a style that looks done. But there's something romantically refreshing about Leighton Meester's gentle waves. Sleep on loosely braided wet hair for a simple riff on the look. 20 of 20 Jennifer Lopez's High Top Knot INF Goff THE STYLE A chunky bun at the crown of the head WHERE A Dolphins game in Miami WHY WE LOVE IT We know-it's hard to pull-off a high bun without looking prissy. The key to Jennifer Lopez's look is the casual, uneven texture. Rather than smoothing back your ponytail with a fine-tooth comb, rake your hair back with your fingers and gather into a high twist.
