You will never hear me say "this year is going to be the best" when the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve. I'm a realist, and I don't want to disappoint myself by setting my expectations too high for the next 12 months.

Last year was the exception. After all of the stress, uncertainty, and loss caused by COVID-19 throughout most of 2020, I knew (ok, I hoped) 2021 wouldn't be worse.

About three months in, it finally feels like we're at a turning point with COVID-19, but it will still be months before things resemble anything close to "normal," and the monotony of WFH and socially distancing have gotten to me.

Byredo's new fragrance gets it.

Aptly called Mixed Emotions, the eau de parfum is a dualistic scent. It opens with sweet cassis, black tea, and synthetic violet, with hints of smoky birch and papyrus.

I've started wearing fragrance every day despite being at home. A few spritzes of the right scent can really lift my mood or set the vibe of the day.

Since I got my hands on a bottle, I keep going back to Mixed Emotions. It embodies how I've felt this year so far: some days I'm good with my now "normal" routine and other days I'm overwhelmingly full of despair.

But at least, all of my emotions smell good.
