Shampoos, conditioners, serums, and leave-in treatments are all products you'd expect to have on deck during wash day. But I've started adding another interesting blend into the mix — and believe it or not, it's done wonders for my curls.

Mud (no, not the type you played in as a kid) can help to detoxify the scalp, cleanse the hair shaft, and clump curls all in one step, without the drying effects of a traditional shampoo. And it has become my product of choice when my hair needs a refresh.

In the past, I've mixed pure bentonite clay with apple cider vinegar, applied it to my hair and let it work its magic. Now, don't get me wrong, it got the job done. But seeing as the mixture is not the most, uh, tidy, it also left me with another job on top of that: clean up.

That's why I'm loving, Bread Beauty Supply's Mud-Mask: Hair & Scalp Detoxifying Pre-Wash Clay Treatment, because it has all these benefits and then some — without the mess.

I was first introduced to the product over the summer when it initially launched. And once I saw that the formula included a blend of kaolin and bentonite clays, glycerin, hemp seed oil, aloe vera juice, and a slew of other nourishing ingredients, I knew I had to give it a go.

To use, I simply section out my hair while it's still dry, apply a generous amount of the mask to my scalp and hair shaft, then clip it up and let the product do its thing for around 20 minutes.

Once I rinse it out my hair, my curls are ultra-defined, soft, sleek, and ready to be easily detangled. My scalp feels as fresh as a May breeze, and there's zero flaking, irritation, or itchiness around these parts.

Another great aspect of the Mud-Mask? It can last me for at least five washes — which says a lot as a person who can go through an entire bottle of conditioner in just one sitting.

Bread definitely understood the assignment.
