On a snowy day during New York Fashion Week, Patrick Ta walked into a Lower East Side restaurant to celebrate his 28th birthday. The Champagne brand Moët & Chandon was throwing him a party, but Ta says, “I was so stressed that no one was going to come.” How wrong he was. Model sisters Bella and Gigi Hadid were quick to arrive, followed by a slew of fellow models, friends, and influencers. “We ended up having over 40 people. I was so happy, I cried.”

The guest list is a testament to the fiercely loyal clientele Ta has amassed. An incredibly shy teen who was bullied by his classmates, he dropped out of high school in San Diego and opened a tanning and nail salon in Scottsdale, Ariz., when he was just 18. Four years later he closed shop and turned his fascination with makeup into a job behind a MAC Cosmetics counter.

Ta's clients include Kate Bosworth, Olivia Munn, and Lais Ribeiro.

He studied pro artists on Instagram and YouTube, eventually sharing his own work on social media. When his followers grew into the thousands, Ta moved to Los Angeles. “Shay Mitchell started following me, and one of her publicists reached out about booking me for an event,” he says. “Shay and Gigi are the first two girls to ever use me; they paved my way in the beauty space and have become my family.”

Ta soon gained acclaim for flawlessly luminous skin and his bold use of color. “I love when my girls look like they’re dipped in glow,” he says.  Now the celebration is all about the launch of his own line, Patrick Ta Beauty, which features a standout shimmering oil (below) and mist.

“All these influential women throughout my life have inspired me to create a collection that allows them to feel confident and beautiful in their own skin — just how they continue to make me feel.”
