I grew up in the age of Jersey Shore and tanning beds and my skin has since suffered from it. At the age of 22 I’d already started to notice premature wrinkles and sunspots and vowed to take better care of my skin from there on out. Despite swearing off sunbathing, I still wanted to maintain a natural glow, which led me on my hunt for the perfect self-tanner — one that also fit into my post-grad budget. After many failed attempts resulting in orange palms and streaked legs, I finally found L'Oréal Paris Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Lotion.

After my test runs with other products, I knew I needed a foolproof formula, which is exactly what I found in the Sublime Bronze tanning lotion. Unlike past formulas that felt impossible to control, this tanning lotion is a bronzed color while still in liquid form, which allows you to see how the product will look when dry and apply precisely where you need it. Plus, the color is buildable so you can opt for a subtle shade or a darker bronze depending on your preference.

To use, I’ll shower and exfoliate my body and then apply the lotion on my damp skin, waiting two to three minutes for the quick-drying formula to fully absorb before dressing. I’ll then wash my hands to make sure no lingering color sets into my palms. Anyone who’s ever gotten a spray tan knows that tanning formulas can stain your sheets and clothes but I’ve never found that to be the case with the Sublime formula. In fact, I’ve only ever used it before bed, allowing the color to sink in for eight hours before rinsing it off in the morning, and my sheets remain intact.

And while most faux-tanning products will begin to crack after a week or two, the Sublime formula has moisturizing vitamin E that allows your color to subtly fade away, versus peeling off. It’s also infused with illuminating micro pearls that catch the light and give your skin a Fenty Fairy Bomb-worthy shimmer, without looking like a disco ball. After five years of consistent use, I can say that this $10 formula is worth every penny.
