Moon Juice

Welcome to Beauty Boss, a reoccurring series in which we spotlight the power players driving the beauty world forward. Consider this your chance to steal their get-ahead secrets, and grow from the real-life lessons they’ve learned on the job.

Moon Juice sounds like something straight out of Game of Thrones (perhaps a magical concoction cooked up at the Citadel), but the line of powders, smoothie blends, and supplemental boosters is very, very real —and extremely popular. Founder Amanda Chantal Bacon founded the wellness company in 2011 to raise awareness to the medicinal, healing power of plants, minerals, and superherbs, and supermushrooms, and since then, has racked up an Instagram following of over 250,000, and has received approval from Gwyneth Paltrow herself.

Using herbal medicine to solve health or stress-related problems isn't a new thing, but Bacon reimagined the thousands-of-years-old practices in a way that makes them easy to explore and add into your busy daily life. Feeling like you can't concentrate? Add a sachet of Brain Dust, made with lion's mane mushroom extract, gingko leaf extract, and maca root extract, to your morning cup of coffee and be on your way. Of course, she also made these special dusts as Instagrammable as possible, too.

Ahead, we chatted with Bacon to find out what the word "adaptogen" really means, what's next for Moon Juice, and the one product her customers can't get enough of.

I’ve read that you started Moon Juice after studying the medicinal powers of food, which in turn helped heal a hypothyroid condition. Can you tell us a little bit about that journey?

The power of diet, lifestyle, managed stress, and adaptogens really became crystal clear to me when I had a year of blood and hormone panels that I could reference. I saw that the seemingly simple daily steps I was taking were making a huge impact on my chemistry. I knew I felt and looked better, but there’s nothing like scientific data to quantify the experience.

What was the first product you created and why?

I first created our line of Moon Dusts so that anyone could be an alchemist in their own kitchen. Our Moon Dusts are adaptogenic blends of superherbs and supermushrooms to nourish body, beauty, and consciousness from the inside out. If your concern is improving the healthy appearance of your hair, skin, and nails, add Beauty Dust to your rituals — with hot water and lemon, or a matcha latte. If you need mental energy, Brain Dust your coffee. If you need a serious mood boost, add Spirit Dust to a smoothie, or a chai tea. When you’re feeling bored and uninspired, Sex Dust your chocolate. For when you’re tense and wired and having trouble sleeping, add Dream Dust to milk or tea.

We’re hearing the word “adaptogens” a lot right now. Can you explain what adaptogens do?

Adaptogens are superherbs and supermushrooms that help expand your body's capacity to handle mental, physical, and emotional stress.

How would you suggest first introducing adaptogens into a diet?

I recently launched a capsule called SuperYou. It contains four adaptogenic superherbs — Shatavari, Amla, Rhodiola, and Ashwagandha — that I chose because of the profound impact they had on my life. SuperYou is like your baseline stress program: Two capsules a day with massive benefits. It’s the simplest way to protect from the pretty severe effects of ongoing stress. I love Shatavari because women can take it in every phase of life for hormonal balance. It wakes up energy and is one of the most powerful adaptogens for reproductive health — beneficial for both men and women. For the visible signs of stress, how it shows up on hair, skin and nails — Amla — because it helps preserve natural collagen by fighting oxidative stress. Rhodiola helps power up the mind and body, increasing focus and energy and clearing up brain fog. And Ashwagandha is incredibly effective at balancing out mood, calming anxious nerves, and reducing irritability.

The supplement sector is exploding, and there are so many choices. However, this sector also isn’t well regulated. What advice would you give someone trying to navigate this wellness genre?

Not all herbs are created equal. It’s critical to use quality herbs and mushrooms that are sourced diligently using the correct extraction process. We obsessively source from quality focused, conscious, organic growers, or wildcrafters. Our plants are harvested from their native regions at the peak of their maturity and extracted for maximum bioactivity.

Why did you decide to launch hair supplements? What makes them any different from the others on the market?

Your hair is one of the primary ways your body signals that there’s something going on internally. We can stay in a preventative state or respond to a critical condition through stress management and nutrition.

SuperHair helps build hair health in four critical ways: targeting stress with adaptogens, replenishing nutritional deficiencies, providing follicle protection, and boosting critical hair micronutrients. SuperHair is one of the only hair supplements formulated with 21 bioactive, bioavailable multi-vitamins, minerals, plant extracts, and hair essentials like biotin, kelp, aaw palmetto, horsetail, plus full spectrum extractions of ashwagandha and ginseng combine to promote healthier, thicker, stronger hair. SuperHair is vegan and formulated with minimal excipients and carriers, so your body can benefit from our potent blend.

What’s your beauty routine like? What are your favorite skincare and makeup products?

My beauty routine is pretty minimal in the bathroom. I cleanse at night. I’ve been using a cleanser that I’ve been formulating for the last year and a half that should be out next fall. I follow cleansing with the exfoliating acid potion (its our version of an adaptogenic clean p-50) and put shea butter on my lips to sleep. In the morning, I rinse with water and apply a very generous amount of plumping jelly to my face and neck. I don’t wear makeup, but if i need an extra pop, I put a Living Libation Cheek and Lip Stain on, and Browfood’s tinted brow gel, and RMS mascara. The things that feel most foundational to my beauty routine happen outside of the bathroom. I do a monthly endermologie session at ricari studios to keep my lymphatic system flowing. This makes a hug difference in skin tone, color, and puffiness. I manage my stress, take SuperHair daily, and sleep eight hours a night. These show up directly in my skin and hair.
