The 2009 SAG Awards
The 2009 SAG Awards
After an over-the-top Golden Globes night set the tone for the 2009 Awards season, Hollywood power players Kate Winslet, Tina Fey and Meryl Streep picked up the notoriously heavy-twelve pounds!-Actor award for their contributions to television and film at the 2009 SAG Awards. One of the few stars to make an under-the-radar arrival at the Shrine Auditorium, Katie Holmes showed off her svelte frame in an asymmetrical gown by Jil Sander when she took the stage to present the Best Actor award to Sean Penn for his performance in Milk.
"When I started acting I remember sitting and thinking, 'I really want to be an actor who can make a living.' I didn't even know this existed when I started," said Best Actress nominee Anne Hathaway. Though she didn't take home a trophy, the Rachel Getting Married star still had a night to remember. "I hope it doesn't make me arrogant, but I love my dress," Hathaway gushed about her figure-hugging Azzaro gown.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
Super-couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie stole the spotlight when they hit the red carpet. "We've been doing it together for four years," Best Actress nominee Jolie (in Max Azria and Tiffany & Co. jewelry) said of the pair's strategy for surviving awards season. "It's always nice to be with your best friend and have a laugh in the middle of it all."
Kate Winslet and Freida Pinto
The SAG celebration began early in the afternoon, when leading ladies like Kate Winslet, Freida Pinto (in Marchesa) and Anne Hathaway showed off red carpet gowns from across the spectrum. "It's quite nice isn't it?" said Winslet, who took home the trophy for Best Supporting Actress, of her cobalt blue Narciso Rodriguez gown. "I liked the color."
"I'm wearing Azzedine Alaia. We had a meeting and we found the dress together. I just loved it!" said Spanish stunner Penelope Cruz of her hands-on approach to finding the perfect dress. "The shoes are Alaia too. The jewels are Chopard."
Eva Longoria Parker and Tony Parker
It took some gentle coaxing from Eva Longoria Parker-who stood out in a citrus-hued Jenny Packham gown-to get a camera-shy Tony Parker (in Salvatore Ferragamo) to pose for photographers. The couple skipped the press line altogether, opting to sign autographs for fans instead.
Amy Adams and Emily Blunt
"Brad and Angelina are behind me," giggled a mildly starstruck Amy Adams (in Giambattista Valli) as she made her way into the Shrine Auditorium, where she bumped into British beauty Emily Blunt (in Pamella Roland).
Taraji P. Henson
While Benjamin Button star Taraji P. Henson wasn't feeling nervous about her SAG nomination, she did spot some potential hazards along the red carpet-L.A. ladies wearing bronzer. "I'm a huge hugger, so I really have to be careful tonight," said the actress, who was mindful not to let anyone get close enough to stain her snow white Herve Leroux gown. "I have to lean back and throw kisses!"
Claire Danes was among the actresses who set a SAG fashion trend-crimson gowns. "It's Nina Ricci," said the actress, who paired the delicate silk tulle gown with jewels from Fred Leighton. Holly Hunter, Lisa Edelstein and Diane Lane also opted for the bold hue.
"Head to toe," said Samantha Who? star Christina Applegate as she gave reporters the rundown on her stunning ensemble. "Lorraine Schwartz, who I am faithful to as a jeweler, Emanuel Ungaro gown, Swarovski clutch. The shoes I don't know because I didn’t look down when they put them on my feet!"
"Mark Townsend, who does my hair, brought me red velvet cupcakes," said January Jones, who later joined her Mad Men co-stars to pick up the award for Best Ensemble in a Drama Series. "I loved that this Andrew Gn dress had a bohemian, Cleopatra feeling that I hadn’t done before."
"My very first audition was a commercial for Cox Cable," said Ugly Betty star America Ferrera (in Vera Wang) of her humble beginnings as an actress. "I went through many, many guest star and commercial auditions that I didn't get called back for."
Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Will Arnett
After going long for the Emmys and the Globes, Tina Fey opted for a much shorter hemline, showing off her gams in a Brian Reyes mini-dress. Joining Fey at the very lucky 30 Rock table-Fey won Best Actress in a Television Series, Alec Baldwin won Best Actor and the cast scored the title of Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series-were pals Amy Poehler and Will Arnett.
