At the 2021 Oscars, the Best Actress nominee rolled up to the red carpet wearing a show-stopping white gown by Alexander McQueen, paired with Forevermark jewelry — but that wasn't the only part of her look that had our jaws on the floor. Celebrity hairstylist Jamika Wilson (who just won an Academy Award herself for her work on the set of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom) used Matrix products to craft a beautiful 'fro-hawk for the star tonight, and she tells us that Davis let her have full creative control. "She allowed me to do my thing, such a blessing to work with Viola and her trust in me to create beautiful styles," Wilson shares exclusively with InStyle. See All of the Incredible Looks From the 2021 Academy Awards When it came to creating the look itself, the inspiration actually came from a previous project the two had worked on together. "On a recent photo shoot I created this style, everyone loved it and thought it would also be perfect for the Oscars," Wilson shares. "The style is edgy and a beautiful juxtaposition to the gown." The hairstylist also wanted to ensure that the kinkiness of the hair was on full display. That's why she used Matrix's Total Results Miracle Creator Multi-Tasking Treatment to help nourish the hair and add shine. "When styling natural hair my goal is always to focus on the beauty of the crown, to showcase the beauty and the texture of natural hair," she says. "The texture of the hair is focal point and really plays in accordance with the dress. The hair style gives a chicness to the look." For those who want to recreate the style at home, Wilson says the key to achieving the look is all about the tools and prepping the hair from the night before. "The secret to creating the style at home is hair combs," she reveals. "Set the hair for a twist out the night before. In the morning untwist the hair, fluff, and use small hair combs to pull the hair up on the sides. The style can also be created on days two, three, and four of a twist out! It's the perfect style for an evening out, a daytime brunch or extending your twist out one more day! Add Matrix Super Fixer Strong Hold Gel to slick the sides and go." Getty Images For the star's face, makeup artist Autumn Moultrie used L'Oréal products to give Davis a smoky eye, complete with fluttery lashes and a soft pink lip. Moultrie's goal was to use the glam to compliment the look of the dress, which she describes as "soft and sophisticated, but also dramatic." Moultrie started off by prepping the actress's skin with the Age Perfect Cell Renewal Midnight Serum, followed by the Age Perfect Radiant Serum Foundation SPF 50 in Mahogany. Next, she used the brand's L'Oreal Paris Age Perfect Satin Glide Eyeliner and Voluminous Mascara for the eyes and wrapped up the look with a combo of the Age Perfect Makeup Anti-Feathering Lip Liner in Cranberry and Bold Orchid for her lips.
