InStyle's editorial guidelines Published on October 15, 2020 @ 07:54AM Pin Share Tweet Email While this awards season has been decidedly different than years past, last night's 2020 Billboard Music Awards did bring some of the elements we know and love. There were speeches! We had looks! There were performances! It was almost, not really, but kind of normal. That said, ahead, let's break down the best moments just in case you missed it. Lizzo's Vote Dress Lizzo has never shied away from making a statement, especially with her fashion. The singer stepped out onto the BBMAs stage wearing a one-shoulder mini dress with an important statement: vote. In her speech, she doubled down on the sentiment saying, "When people try to suppress something, it's normally because that thing holds power. They're afraid of your power. There's power in who you are. There's power in your voice." John Legend's Touching Tribute During a powerful performance, John Legend dedicated his song "Never Break" to his wife Chrissy Teigen. Teigen and Legend announced that they had lost a pregnancy just two weeks ago. "We will never break/ Built on a foundation/ Strong enough to stay/ We will never break," he sang. Lizzo Had the Perfect Response to Health and Body-Shamers Demi Lovato's Powerful Political Statement Just a day after releasing her single "Commander in Chief." a powerful political ballad aimed at Donald Trump, Demi Lovato took to the BBMAs stage to give a performance of the song. "Commander in Chief, honestly / If I did the things you do / I couldn't sleep, seriously / Do you even know the truth? / We're in a state of crisis, people are dyin' / While you line your pockets deep / Commander in Chief / how does it feel to still / Be able to breathe?," she sang. Behind her the word "VOTE" was brightly lit. The Return of En Vogue En Vogue returned to the BBMAs stage to perform their 1992 hit "Free Your Mind," and it was everything. Host Kelly Clarkson called them "just as relevant now as it was then," honestly, it was an understatement.
