In what may be seen as an attempt to modernize the organization, the HFPA enlisted Snoop Dogg to announce the nominees, which do include a diverse list of actors and films, including Will Smith in King Richard and Netflix's Squid Game. It's a stark contrast to last year's lack of Black-led films, such as Judas and the Black Messiah and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom The process was different this time around, Entertainment Weekly reports. The HFPA didn't require studio submissions for the 2022 nominations, but the organization noted that it "would consider requests from filmmakers and studios who asked that their content be considered in specific categories." Standouts, which could predict upcoming Oscar nominations, include Kristen Stewart for Spencer, Denis Villeneuve for his directorial work on Dune, and Leonardo DiCaprio's performance in Don't Look Up. NBC announced it would not be airing the awards ceremony on in 2022 and there hasn't been any news regarding a telecast this year, though winners will be announced on Sunday, January 9.
