Our Favorite Looks from 2013's Emmy Nominated Shows
Scandal, Season 2, Episode 7
"Kerry (Washington) and I wanted to find something as wonderful and stylish as the Calvin Klein vintage gown she wore last season," the show's costume designer, Lyn Paolo, told us. "After much searching we found this vintage Fares gown, which did everything we needed it to do. It is stunning, in Olivia Pope’s color palette, and it moved beautifully on the body."
Scandal, Season 2, Episode 15
Originally envisioning Olivia in a sleek Calvin Klein gown, Paolo told us that she chose this Escada dress instead "because Olivia’s life and loves are once again in turmoil, we have transitioned to a gown that is both black and white, feminine and romantic."
Scandal, Season 2, Episode 14
Paolo noted how in this episode, Olivia's clothes mirrored the twisty plot. "The main fashion note for this episode was the introduction of the new purse choices for Olivia as well as our continued use of opera length gloves to accent her coats," Paolo told us.
Mad Men, Season 6, Episode 1
Who could forget our introduction to the '60s with this mod suit worn by Jessica Pare? (Okay, and Jon Hamm shirtless.) "I found this bikini at Palace Costume in Los Angeles," costume designer Janie Bryant told InStyle.com. "I had my fitting with Megan in the beginning of the season and I had her try on a few different bikinis, but this is the one we knew she’d wear."
Mad Men, Season 6, Episode 7
“I felt it was such a strong suit for Peggy because she’s reprimanding Don,” Bryant said. “If you look closely, there are watches on the print of the skirt. I love the whole idea of keeping time with Peggy. She’s like that. The print is so perfect for her.”
Mad Men, Season 6, Episode 9
Betty is back! She caught the eyes of the gas station attendant and ex Don Draper when she wore this look. "It was very important that it showed off her body," Bryant said. "For Don, it’s bringing back those memories of his formal life when he sees her. The silhouette is classic Betty Draper."
Mad Men, Season 6, Episode 10
"This is the first time we see Joan in a dress that really hearkens back to her old days of being office manager and being in a secretarial position," said Bryant. "I wanted to do that for the scene because of her being reprimanded by Pete Campbell. For her to be in a power suit didn’t really have that same feeling. She had to look 'traditional Joan' for that scene."
The Good Wife, Season 4, Episode 19
“We had saved this outfit for a long time,” costume designer Daniel Lawson told us of choosing this Wes Gordon skirt suit. "We completely rebuilt it. It had a big bustle in the back, and we took a lot of excess out. What I loved is the fabric—it’s extremely thick cashmere and you just want to touch it."
Nashville, Season 1, Episode 1
"I wear the most gorgeous clothes and it’s so fun,” star Connie Britton tells us of her character Rayna James's style. “My character is at the height of her career and she’s in a place where she can afford these things.” That includes this great Chloe blouse!
Girls, Season 2, Episode 1
Marnie (Allison Williams) steps out of her style zone with her work uniform-a sleeveless button-down and short-shorts held up by suspenders. "We put together a bunch of research of looks that fashion designers have made for hospitality uniforms, and then pulled from that what would be most appropriate," the show's costume designer Jenn Rogien explained. "We wanted the look to be a challenge for Marnie, to push her boundaries so she could be a little more provocative."
Girls, Season 2, Episode 5
Hannah (Lena Dunham) wears her signature skimpy look during the episode where she meets guest-star Patrick Wilson's character, Joshua, at Grumpys. "It continues the 'shorteralls' theme that Hannah's been on, so it made sense that she would wear something like that to work-and that she would think that that particular piece was fun," Rogien told us of the printed Topshop look.
