The 35 Most Naked Dresses of All Time

Naked dresses are perhaps the most impressive of all red carpet feats. While they may not always make the best-dressed list, they do require a certain breed of celebrity to pull off. Not only do you have to have the balls to risk a wardrobe malfunction, but you have to do it with enough confidence that you look fierce — not terrified — in the photographs. Take Naomi Campbell's appearance in Valentino's couture show during the spring/summer 2019 presentation. The legendary model gracefully strutted down the runway in a see-through gown with a ruffle skirt. (Click through the gallery for the NSFW photo).Ā  Get the inside scoop on all your favorite celebrities with our FREE daily newsletter, InStyle Celebrity. Breaking news, relationship updates, hairstyle inspo, fashion trends, and more direct to your inbox! Let's not forgetĀ Rihanna’s infamous CFDA dress either. The girl rocked a completely sheer dress without a bra — and later remarked that her only regret was not wearing a bedazzled thong to match. That, my friends, is dedication. Then, there was the year 2015, when the Met Gala saw not one nor two but three naked dresses on the red carpet, all worn by Hollywood’s hottest A-listers. Jennifer Lopez, above, bared her famous curves in a custom Atelier Versace illusion gown. BeyoncĆ© was nearly naked in Givenchy. And Kim Kardashian West almost looked modest in comparison in her sheer Roberto Cavalli dress, because no one’s getting naked without KKW joining in. Click through to see the best naked dresses of all time.

Chanel celebrity makeup artist Kate Lee used Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in Coromandel ($34 at chanel.com)-a creme texture orange-red hue - for Jessica Pare’s poppy statement mouth. "I didn't want to use a matte shades as I was trying to avoid any product that would make the look retro as opposed to modern,ā€ she told us. After prepping her skin with a moisturizing serum, Lee used a lightweight foundation with SPF to create a flawless base. Right before she walked out the door, the look was finished by adding a tiny amount of Cle de Peau Translucent Powder ($105 at neimanmarcus.com) ā€œto the top off the hairline, tip of the nose and chin to diffuse the light.ā€

Julianne Moore

dazzled in Dior and complimented her couture gown with wind-swept makeup. Picking up an Emmy for her role in Game Change, the redheaded beauty took to the red carpet wearing subtle eye makeup and a punchy lip. To recreate her look, makeup artist Allan Avendano illuminated the actress’ skin with Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen ($37 at dior.com) and gave her a just-pinched rouge cheek with Diorblush in Strawberry Sorbet ($42 at dior.com).

’s makeup artist Carola Gonzalez used the star's blush sequin Vivienne Westwood Couture gown as inspiration when creating her soft look. We’re loving the Scandal actress' subtle yet glam beige lip and long, bold lashes. To create her look, Gonzalez stayed true to the stars natural complexion and only added a hint of bronzing powder to the apples of her cheeks. Using Dior 5-Couleur Eyeshadow in Earth Reflection ($59 at sephora.com), Gonzalez created a bronzed smoldering smoky eye and finished off her luscious look with two coats of black mascara.

Christina Hendricks

Credit: Steve Granitz/WireImage

As always, Christina Hendricks sizzled on the red carpet with shoulder-grazing wavy locks and '40's glam makeup. Inspired by the Mad Men actress' feminine dress and its shimmery neutral color, makeup artist Vanessa Scali wanted to keep her face soft and romantic with a contrasting bold lip. Using Hourglass products, Scali prepped Hendrick’s skin with a penetrating primer serum and Illusion Tinted Moisturizer ($55 at sephora.com), leaving her porcelain skin clean and flawless. But it’s Hendricks' bright lip that we’re lusting after. Using Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Icon ($28 at sephora.com), Scali complimented Hendricks' fiery hair with a stunning cherry lip.

Allison Williams

Credit: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images

It’s no surprise that Allison Williams’ makeup artist Julie Harris was inspired by the star's baby blues. ā€œAllison has such big gorgeous blues that I wanted to accentuate them with a stronger eye and a softer lip,ā€ Harris told us. To create her dramatic eye, Harris lined the star’s upper lids with Tarte’s MultiplEYE Lash Enhancing Liquid Liner ($65 at sephora.com) and layered Amazonian Clay Waterproof CreamEyeshadow in Seashell Pink ($19 at sephora.com) on the base of her lids. "To add extra radiance, I highlighted her brow and cheekbones with creme cheek tint," Harris told us. She finished off with a swipe of shiny gloss over a matte lip tint.

Kate Mara Side-Swept Waterfall Braid

Credit: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images

Kate Mara

’s side-swept waterfall braid—a super romantic and youthful look created by hairstylist Christopher Naselli—is perfect for women that favor softer, loose updos. Slung into a low bun, the hair was first spritzed with Oribe’s Foundation Mist ($22 at oribe.com) for added texture, then rough-dryed and curled with a l y ā€œ barrel curling iron. Naselli took a large section at the crown and loosely braided a plait that followed Mara’s hairline. He then pulled all of the hair over to the right side and around the ear. When recreating this look, let the pieces fall naturally and pin where needed.

Heidi Klum's Soft Shiny Waves

Credit: Gregorio Binuya/Everett Collection

Heidi Klum

exuded Old Hollywood glamour with her sheer, seafoam Alexandre Vauthier gown and soft, shiny waves. ā€œI was inspired by French fashion photographer Guy Bourdin, whose models always looked so glamorous,ā€ her hairstylist Oribe told us. ā€œThis look is new for Heidi because it’s so soft and easy.ā€ He blew it out first with a round brush and then sprayed separate sections of the hair with his Soft Lacquer Heat Styling Spray ($32 at oribe.com) and used a curling iron to create pincurls. To hold the style, he lightly veiled Impermeable Anti-Humidity Spray ($38 at oribe.com). ā€œI then pinned back one side slightly to keep it off the face and show off her Lorraine Schwartz earrings,ā€ he explains.

Kat Dennings' Bohemian Waves

Kat Dennings

’ soft flowing waves and delicate gold Jennifer Behr headpiece added a soft, feminine touch to her jewel-tone gown. After towel-drying hair and texturizing the waves with Renee Furterer Volumea Volumizing Foam ($23 at renefurtererusa.com for locations), hairstylist Mara Roszak used a 1-inch barrel curling iron on random sections of hair to create a more natural looking wave. Using her fingers to part the strands, Roszak also teased the crown for additional volume then placed the gilded accessory a couple inches back from the hair line for a peek-a-boo effect. The look was complete with a light veil of hairspray for a soft touchable hold all night long!

Nicole Kidman's Sleek and Polished Strands

Credit: Gregorio Binuya/Everett Collection

Celebrity hairstylist David Babaii used ITampLY's Pure Water Drops Serum and Pure Texture ($31 italyhairfashion.com for locations) to create Nicole Kidman’s sleek, polished look. After applying the products to wet hair and creating a severe center part, Babaii blew her hair dry with a large paddle brush to smooth hair super straight. He advises avoiding metal-coated brushes as those bristles only generate unnecessary heat and will cause hair to be bake as oppose to dry. Inside Tip: ā€œBy sectioning the hair you have total control over the style, making sure every strand is smooth and sleek,ā€ says Babaii.

Padma Lakshmi's Voluminous Loose Curls

Credit: Jeff Vespa/WireImage

"This look is easy to to take from the red carpet to real life," Padma Lakshmi's hairstylist, Michael Duenas says. "It's sexy, understated and ultra-feminine." To create the Top Chef judge's look, he began with dry hair and worked in mousse from roots to ends. Using a curling tong, Duenas wrapped 1" sections away from the face to create tight spirals. To ward off humidity and add shine, he generously veiled Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS Elastic Flexible Hold Hairspray ($18.95 at amazon.com) and Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS Sparkler Shine Spray ($19 at amazon.com) over the star's 'do. He then lightly brushed out the curls to reveal a gorgeous soft wave. Complete the look and tame frizz with a dime-sized amount of smoothing cream.

Claire Danes' Veronica Lake-Inspired Waves

Credit: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic

Celebrity hairstylist Peter Butler took inspiration from Claire Danes’ ā€œmagical marigold strapless Lavin dress." Butler ā€œchanneled Veronica Lake to create elegant yet natural waves.ā€ He says loose curls rely on creating texture while preventing fly-aways and frizz and started by evenly applying 10 drops of John Frieda Frizz-Ease Sheer Solution Lightweight Frizz Control ($7.99 at cvs.com) from the roots to the ends on damp hair. He next applied a handful of mousse and combed through. Butler says finding a good side part is critical. To finish, he misted Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm-Hold Hair Spray ($5.99 at drugstore, com) in an even, all-around motion, to set the look.
