Wrist blades, parkour, and hoods? It must be the first trailer for Assassin’s Creed.
The long-awaited video game adaptation (out Dec. 21) has debuted its first footage via Wednesday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and fans are finally getting a chance to see Michael Fassbender in action in the dual role of Callum Lynch and Aguilar—blood relatives separated by a few hundred years and connected through a pieces of sci-fi technology called the Animus.
The game series, which began in 2007, has transported gamers to various points in history, and true to the franchise’s legacy, the film straddles the near future and 14th century Spain.
When Entertainment Weekly spoke with Fassbender, he admitted that the games were new to him when he signed on, but he and director Justin Kurzel (Macbeth) worked hard to capture their spirit. “I’ve played it since [being offered the job] mainly to get an idea of the physicality of the character,” he said. “We’re striving to find something special. We believe the whole concept around it is special and want to service that the best we can. The fans are really passionate, very specific, and they expect accuracy and historical detail. We’re really trying to capitalize and feed on and enjoy the fun element. We’re working hard to make this something special.”
