Ah, the Gallaghers. TV’s most dysfunctional family returns to Showtime on Nov. 5, and we can’t wait to see what Season 8 has in store. Last season of Shameless was nothing short an emotional rollercoaster, with Monica’s death ushering in a new era for her just-remarried husband, Frank, and their kids. It seemed like the family was finally back on track—or, really, on track for the first time ever.
Fiona was successfully running two businesses and dipping her toes into Chicago’s real estate market. Lip was trying to get sober. Ian found his calling as an EMT. Debbie was pursuing her newfound passion for welding. Carl left his criminal ways in the past and embraced military school. And the youngest Gallagher, Liam, began attending a wealthy local private school. Everyone seemed to be on the right path—but this is Shameless, and we know that won’t last too long. Sooner or later, sh*t will hit the fan (and we’ll go out on a limb here and guess that it’ll be sooner). While there are sure to be plenty of curve balls heading our way when the show returns this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, we're holding out hope for a few storylines in particular. Scroll down for eight things we’d love to see in season eight.
1. Fiona to be in a relationship that’s actually healthy.
We’re all about Fiona giving the single life a try, but her Tinder-ing got a bit out of control last season. While we respect her healthy attitude towards sex and the power she feels when swiping right, we’re ready to see our South Side heroine settle down with someone who really cares about her—and isn’t, you know, secretly a heroin addict or a car thief.
2. Lip to get his act together, once and for all.
Oh, Lip. For seven long seasons, we’ve rooted for him to be the Gallagher kid who truly makes it in life. But after getting kicked out of college, he’s struggled to stay sober and figure out his future. His downward spiral included alienating his latest girlfriend, Sierra, and breaking into his ex’s house. Bad news all around. Luckily, he seemed to be serious about getting his life under control as he began attending AA meetings at the end of last season. We just want to see our #1 South Side crush leave the booze behind, put his smarts to good use, and get serious with Sierra, his most stable love interest in years (or ever, really).
3. Debbie to break up with Neil, find real love, and follow her welding dreams.
Sure, Neil has a lot to offer Debbie in terms of financial stability and a place to live. But while we’ve grown to love his unfiltered thoughts, it’s time for Debbie to find someone she loves for more than his wallet. And maybe someone who’s less easily manipulated when it comes to her family’s half-brained schemes, like using Neil as bait while they rob a bus full of casino-bound senior citizens. Neil deserves better, and Debbie should just call off their engagement before she makes things worse for everyone. Especially since last we saw her, she was flirting with her teacher at welding school. Probably not the best choice in romantic partner for little Debs, but we’ll see where that goes.
4. Ian to take his relationship with Trevor seriously.
For years, we shipped Ian and Mickey hard. But after last season’s finale saw Ian leave his on-again-off-again (but definitely on-the-run) convict boyfriend at the Mexican border, it felt like these two might be ready to say goodbye for good. If that’s the case, then we couldn’t think of anyone better for Ian to be with than Trevor. Here’s to hoping that Ian can actually be faithful to his BF, stay on his meds for bi-polar disorder, and keep saving lives as an EMT.
5. Kev and V to get revenge on—and move on from—Svetlana.
The “throuple” is no more, and we’re okay with that. Kev and V finally learned that Svetlana was deceiving them all throughout their three-way marriage and legally transferred ownership of their bar, The Alibi, without their knowledge (that’ll teach these two not to sign “adoption” papers without actually reading the documents first). Here’s to hoping that the two make a stronger team than ever this season. And that Kev is still enjoying his bartending gig at a gay bar, where he happily dances around in gold short-shorts.
6. Carl to pursue a career in the military.
When Carl headed off to military school last season per the advice of his ex-girlfriend’s father, it’s safe to say that Shameless fans breathed a collective sigh of relief. After a while, we were truly starting to think that Carl would end up dead or in jail before he even turns 18. So when he returned home for Monica’s funeral with a new sense of discipline (and newly acquired cooking skills), for the first time we found ourselves hoping that Carl just might be okay, after all. Let’s just hope that he’s really turned over a new leaf, as we’d love to see this Gallagher kid actually make something of himself.
7. Liam to excel in school.
Poor little Liam has been through a lot on this show. In the past, he was just an afterthought for his parents and siblings alike. But last season, he finally found his voice when he found out that he wouldn’t be able to go to first grade since the local public school closed. When Frank wormed his way into the principal’s office at a ritzy private school nearby, though, he did a bit of good for once and landed Liam a spot, free of charge. This season, we want to see Liam excel in school and continue to speak up about what he wants—and deserves—in life.
8. Frank to get a real job and act like a parent for once.
Monica was no doubt a terrible mother to the Gallagher brood, but now that she’s officially dead, it’s time for Frank to stop living in his drug- and alcohol-fueled world and actually try to help his children succeed in life. Wishful thinking, but worth a shot.
