Nashville returned with a bang last night and with so much going on our favorite country music characters needed wardrobes to match the drama. Holding the reigns for these characters’ looks was costume designer Susie DeSanto whom InStyle.com caught up with on the phone to get her exclusive rundown of last night’s episode. The episode centered on transitions, firstly with Rayna (Connie Britton) dealing with a family loss, designing her launch of Highway 65 records and crafting her new album, “the most interesting thing about Rayna, even from the pilot, all those layers of people she is, the full wattage sequin look to this business woman,” said DeSanto. “Instead of making decisions about her music, last year was all about finding her voice and finding her artistic relevance (when she got involved with Liam) and now she’s got her label and making decisions about what singles on her record are going to make money. Rayna has to make decisions based on finances, keeping her lives together.”
Rayna was not alone last night as Scarlett (Clare Bowen) got the chance to sing with Gunnar (Sam Palladio) in front of none other than Kelly Clarkson—and DeSanto made sure Scarlett looked true to herself, “I think that Scarlett’s character, right now she’s re-evaluating, she doesn’t like being on tour and she really likes being a songwriter. I really liked that scene and the song and I think anytime she can be not styled and be more like herself is truest to the character.” There is clearly more in store for Scarlett and even Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) whose career is on a downspin, but could potentially have a romance with Avery (Jonathan Jackson), but we will have to wait until next week to find out! So make sure to tune in next week for an all new Nashville episode at 10/9c on ABC.
